Thumbs down Rain water gets in the boot on opening the boot lid

When I open the boot, stagnated water (after a rain) on top of the boot lid gets splashed on the rear wind screen and rushes down into the boot, unstoppable by the rubber channel at the bottom of the rear wind screen.

On a few occasions, it has led to my contents in the boot getting wet.

On closer inspection, the rubber channel is very different from that in the E60, the latter cup/curve up to "catch" the downward rolling water beads, whereas on the F10, the rubber channel is a little hump - too small to stop the rolling water beads. As a matter of fact, it allows to water to race past this hump and straight into the boot!

I am very annoyed with this lacking in design and intent to press my dealer for a solution. Anybody else having the same experience?

That's an annoying one. I had a similar issue on a new model VW Passat back in 1998, beading water shot off the lid and into the boot. VW designed a new hinge to stop it happening. Had them retrofitted and it stopped the problem. Wonder what BMW will do...? Certainly report it to BMW.

Never had this problem with my F10 and believe me, it rains a lot up here in Aberdeenshire! Additionally, every time I wash the car I open the boot lid in order to get rid of most of the water - as you say, it flows onto the rear window, but then it goes into the top channel and drains down the sides.
It sounds as if you might have a faulty seal.

There is nothing faulty.
Mine is making the same thing.

The solution. When the boot lid is really full of water, pick up manually slowly to permit water drain slowly.

I don't have that problem, but there does seem to be a general design fault with the F11 (not sure if it's the same with the F10) where when you open the rear doors when the car is wet, it dumps a load of water onto the back seats....

As I said before, when I wash the car and the boot lid is full to overflowing, I always open it to get rid of as much water as possible before drying the car; it runs onto the back window, then into the top channel and drains down the sides. It never goes into the boot.

Never had a problem with this in my F10 after heavy rains or washing the car...the water gets drained off pretty effectively. If I open the boot very fast, i get a few drops in but not otherwise.

Garage List
I get the odd drip if a lot of standing water is on the boot lid - but hardly anything to speak of.

Just realised what your problem might be - at the lowest point on the rear window lower lip seal there are 3 drain slots, each approx 20mm x 1.5mm. These allow water to flow into the upper boot channel and down the sides; if these are blocked or restricted, the water would probably cascade over the seal and into the boot.
I suggest you check that the 3 slots are clear.

This sounds like good advice Jon - it makes a lot of sense - I am going to check for this, as I see this problem too, typically after heavy rain / standing water on boot. Thank you.

Thanks, glad to be of assistance; as I've said before, I always open the lid immediately after washing to get rid of excess water and even with it full to overflowing, I've never seen any water dripping into the boot.
