Ended up not completing the purchase. Now looking at a 2016 640i coupe (loaded) that's a couple hours away from me. Price is about $34k, with 62.5k miles. Is this high mileage for a N55? Not worried about paying for maintenance, more worried about the potential number of breakdowns

No, again that is not high mileage. If you are so worried about breakdown, you should buy a new car with factory warranty.

My brand new M340i was constantly in the shop for issues too

I guess it doesn't matter, the leaks will happen sooner or later. I will see how it goes with the back and forth with the dealer and their ridiculous fees.

Leaks will happen at any mileage. I've seen major leaks at just 30k and none at 150k+. Just a gamble but can also depends on age of car and how frequent it is driven.

But in your case, the N55 doesn't have any $$$ leaks, unlike the N62/N63- which are never ending. Once corrected in the N55, you are usually set for another 50-100k.
