Battery Discharging Warning
Anyone else have this warning? Any insights?
I don't have anything plugged in. It has gotten a bit colder as of late, but it's running 50s-60s here in Atlanta.

Did you install any new part?
I had this happen in my X5M as soon as I had the dash cam installed and I would start the car after a few hours of it being parked. As soon as I had the dash cam removed, it went away. During that research though, I did come across this issue on several vehicles without any parts and it had to do something with the internals not functioning correctly. Might need to take it your dealer for a proper diagnosis if it is happening out of nowhere and not going away. |

I get this due to my dash cam but I have Power Magic Pro installed which will shut off the cameras if the voltage drops below a certain level.
BMW's battery monitoring system is super sensitive and I would not worry about it at this point if I were you.

I figured it's being a little sensitive because the car has not been driven every other week for the past month as I've been traveling a week at a time for work.
I only have my USB cable plugged into the car. I don't have any other accessories at all. It is however, annoying because it's shut off the interior lights at night (dome light) Anyone think throwing it on a battery charger will help? My commute is 25 miles to work so 50 miles a day should be sufficient for charging right?

It's not a charging problem, its a draw while the vehicle should be asleep problem.
The vehicle needs to have energy diagnosis run on it to determine what circuit(s) are not going to sleep as intended and are drawing on the battery. |

Take a look at these two threads, lots of good info (and a bit of ranting)

It is a battery drain, needs investigating if you can't identify an obvious problem. |

Bb34, thanks for those. Yeah, I've read thru them and dismissed it due to mine being a discharge issue, but now my car is saying charge battery.
I've been through the battery replacement ordeal with registration etc. with my E60. I do it however want to push this until I get stranded in traffic. Pity the car may get to that point. I am hoping that maybe a defective battery is a CPO claim but I will not hold my breath! I'm going to throw it on the charger tonight to see if it will correct it (hopefully permanently). If not, then it's the PITA dealer we go.....

I had this message and it was being caused by a Bluetooth OBDII adapter that I had been messing around with. I forgot it was installed. I removed the adapter and haven't seen the message since.

For me it was happening during extremely cold days (even with brand new loaner they gave me while my car was being checked), and as a result of system protecting itself I guess, there's limit on what you can use. For example you can't have heat blowing in the car (other than windshield defrost). Where I live, needless to say that's a bit of an issue on super cold days. Also for me the only way to recharge it was trickle charger, driving up to an hour, no matter driving conditions never got rid of warning. My "wise" neighbors love coming over looking at power cord hanging out of the trunk: "oh, I didn't know those were electric - good for you saving our planet like that". |

happens every winter, especially if i drive the car every other day. I just hookup a battery Tender to keep it charged up.
These cars have so much electronics/gadgets/tech, its the nature of the beast. |

Its funny people start small talk about cars on fuel economy.... some guys at the office were talking about new cars and fuel economy... then they turned to me and asked about my car... I said V8 Twin Turbo... do you think I care!

i got the same message a couple weeks ago when my car sat in my storage for a few weeks. my commute to work is about 35 min so after going to work and coming home i'm assuming it was enough to recharge the battery. haven't seen the message since but with winter coming up i'll probably have to get a charger this time as she hibernates during the winter.

Anyone know if I can charge via the jump points under the hood? I tried last night and it seemed to work as the charger was charging, but I still got the discharge warning although the charge battery command is gone.

That's where it's supposed to be done. IMHO you need a new battery. I had the same issue before my battery went south; tender showed battery charged yet it wasn't. Do you have an AGM-specific charger?? From what I've read a standard charger may or may not work with an AGM battery. Something about the deep cycle properties of the AGM battery.

Hi
I got this same message once when I came back to my car after leaving my parking lights on. Now I'm worried to use them incase the car won't start. I get the feeling my battery could do with a full charge possibly? Thanks

I was one of the OP on the link above and based on my experience the cold temp is bad for any battery, it reduces the remaining life while not driven. Device such as dash cam, jb4, bluetooth devices, obd2 wil increase this this batter degradation. Remember anything that is plugged into the cigarette lighter will remain powered on during the time the car is parked. it doesnt kill the car from starting up but it does reduce the overall capacity of the battery and driving it around will charge it. assuming the battery is heathly.
I dont think my car ever left me stranded due to this message but it is kinda annoying that certain items is off, not to mention the yellow triangle on the dash, until the battery is at full power again. |

This is not correct!!! After 7-8 minutes, the cigarette lighter's power does turn off. Check it out and see. |

I've read about dealerships (my own included) telling owners they must unplug any auxiliary devices, like iPods etc. Sounded like BS to me, for a car this sophisticated to get battery drained by music player plugged overnight (or having to actually plug and unplug it every time you arrive at your destination). I know for a fact that radio and any lights shut off approximately 8 minutes after turning the car off, but not pressing start/stop for the second time, I certainly hope that's the case with all electronics in the car. |
