Activating the exhaust valves on F10 535i, coding, need help!
Hi everybody!
I have the car BMW 535i N55 with installed exhaust from the M5. On the new M5 mufflers there are vacuum valves. Stock 535i does not have vacuum control for exhaust but I really want the flaps to work as intended by BMW! How flaps work on the M5: - vacuum through the tube comes from the engine in the trunk and there it is connected to the solenoid valve, this solenoid is controlling the vacuum valves on the silencers; - the solenoid valve is controlled by the DME engine module, it gives a signal to open the flaps, depending on the gear, rpm and engine load. After studying how it works on other BMWs with the same N55 engine and the same DME engine module, I found it is the same! And not only with the N55, with other engines, where there are vacuum (not electric) valves, the principle of operation is the same everywhere! For example, in the X3 F25 with the N55 engine and the same DME there is a mufflers with a vacuum valves and its algorithm and the electrical valve connection circuit in the trunk to the DME under the hood, exactly the same as the M5. I have connected the solenoid valve according to the circuit diagram from Rheingold: one pin to the power supply through a fuse, and the other pin to the signal from DME (pin #3 in the connector A211*1B), see photo below. Solenoid valve in the trunk: How flaps are opened/closed depending on the gear and engine speed (always the same for all F-series BMWs with a vacuum valves): Conclusion: my DME F10 n55 module will can give a signal to open the flaps for sure! But it needed only to CODE it correctly! Then, in order to understand how to send a signal from DME to the solenoid valve, I started looking at E-sys, and in the DME settings I found 3 settings that, in their name, are related to the exhaust valves: DME->AGK-Config (AGK-config) Comment: Abgasklappe - (AGK) Konfiguration Wert_00 (value 00) = 00 - (default for F10 N55) Wert_01 (value 01) = 01 Wert_02 (value 02) = 02 Wert_03 (value 03) = 03 DME->Konfiguration Abgasklappensteuerung (Exhaust valve control configuration) Comment = Abgasklappenregelung - (AKR) Variante initwert = 00 Wert_25 (Value of 25) = 25 - (default for F10 N55) DME->AKR-Variante Comment = Abgasklappenregelung - (AKR) Variante 0x00 - Variante 0 aktiviert - (default for F10 N55) 0x01 - Variante 1 aktiviert 0x02 - Variante 2 aktiviert 0x03 - Variante 3 aktiviert Then I connected the valve in the trunk as per the circuit diagram, placed it in the cabin, connected a voltmeter to it and played with different variations of these settings for several days, but I could not get the long-awaited signal from DME . Most likely I need something else to code! And I don’t know what... Please help me with ideas on what to code, so that DME will give a signal to open the flaps! Also I'm ready to provide access remotely by teamviewer and pay for the works! Also, if someone can drop me the CAF file from DME (from F-series car with vacuum exhaust valves) to compare settings, I would be very grateful! To those who read it - thanks! |

Solution was found!
You have to flash DME with MHD Flasher and select checkbox: Exhaust burble. Then configure sliders as you need. Also select "exhaust flaps always open in Sport mode", if need it. This is perfect solution if you installing M5/M6 to F10 535i mufflers or others with vacuum valves. Just connect vacuum line from the engine bay to vacuum solenoid. And connect vacuum solenoid to DME. Now at low RPM no any drone and at high RPM I can hear awesome sound of my exhaust with opened flaps. MHD Flasher made all the work and flaps will work correct with your BMW! |

There is no wiring for the valve in the trunk. I have connected vacuum line and wire connected to DME (pin #3 in the connector A211*1B), then vacuum and valve signal wire was layed to the trunk. Then vacuum line from vacuum valve was connected to the muffler.

To connect wire to DME you have to find right pin, I do not know original part number, I just found it in my garage and it fits to this connector. Also be careful with DME connector it is easy to damage it. To open this connector you have take off the lock. Еxample how to disassemble the DME connector how looks needed pin: Also to lay vacuum line inside cabin i drilled the hole in the rubber bushing (see on the picture). You have to drill from the cabin, BMW located the dot to make sure you will not drill the wiring. You can see this dot from cabin. Last edited by ssneck; 05-01-2019 at 06:30 AM.. Once you have the clip off the harness, what's the safest way to remove the pin from the harness? Do you depress down or push out with pin removal tools? From the image It looks like you depress from the top of the pin and not from within the center of the pin. This might not be the right pin picture, but it looks like the center?

Ok I think I figured out all the information I was looking for before.
I bought the solenoid (BMW 11747810831) on Ebay with the mating connector and a few inches of wire lead for $9.99 shipped. Looks like the wires on the solenoid harness are: Signal to the DME is 22 AWG aka 0.5 MM2 (Brown w/ Gray stripe) and the Power wire is 16 AWG aka 1.3 MM2 (Red w/ 2x White stripes). According to Real OEM the pin we need for the DME is a Terminal Socket MCON 1.2, 0,5-0,75 MM²/AG. Which is 22-20 AWG wire (0.52 MM2). TE 1534594-1 for 22 AWG $0.27 each https://www.digikey.com/product-deta...8CT-ND/9606865 And the vac line seems like it is 4mm ID which is 5/32" So I would suggest buying a few pins and approx 25-30 ft of wire and that size vac line and Y or T junction and we should be good to go.

I removed the plastic covers inside the car from bottom of A-pillar, door sills and the bottom part of B-pillar and in addition the bottom part of the rear seat and the leftmost part of the backrest of the rear seat. Then I placed the vacuum line to go the same route with cars wiring harness that goes from front to back on that side of the car in the door sill area. So it's gonna take some time if done properly. You can see all the parts from the M5 part list (see the link below). It's the part #4 in the picture. Also buy the T-connector #5. I also bought the #2 so the solenoid valve sits in correct place with full OEM mounting. There was a slot for that mount too readily existing. So these would be needed, 18307551543 61131361918 11721439973 M5 Parts list It also makes sense to buy one straight vacuum line connector in case you need to make a joint at some location: 11657803012 The smaller one of the connector pin part numbers below is suitable to fit the fuse box (don't remember anymore which one of those was the smaller one), so you can add the solenoid operating voltage connection to the correct slot in the original fuse box on the right hand side of the trunk. In F11 the correct fuse location is #36 (5A). It's important that the operating voltage feed is behind the ignition key (15) and not in continuous power (30). In my case temporary connection directly from battery + (with a fuse) emptied the battery partly over night (ECU pin seems to be grounded when ECU is without power). 61130007437 61130007440 And finally the correct ECU pin is: 12527581158 And this is how it looks finally from outside (all done with OEM M5 parts): Last edited by M@rkus; 08-24-2021 at 12:56 PM.. |
