N63TU1 Class Action Lawsuit

Did anyone receive the class action lawsuit info in the mail recently? I received it last week and it pertains to the excessive oil burning issue notorious for this engine.

The offered remedies include repayment of up to 4 oil changes (between regular oil changes). Assuming you have receipts for the scheduled oil service and the "extra" one.

Repayment for up to 9 quarts of oil purchases assuming they happened in between regular oil changes. (again receipts required)

Reimbursement of oil consumption testing and past repairs.

Reimbursement of past replacement of engine (prorated based on the mileage at the time of failure).

In addition, going forward for 10 yrs/120k miles any oil consumption test or service will be covered.

Finally, you can also get a $1k or $1.5k voucher for a new BMW depending on model.

If only they would cover the damn upper oil pan gasket leak that would really make my day.

I've got the N63 (2011 550i) and here in Australia, they don't have a class action, so all the usual issues are funded by the owner

I have not had any excessive oil burning issues, but have had to occasionally top off with 2 quarts between oil services. I did regularly change oil every 6 months, so looks like I can get some reimbursement for that.

Actually I think they will do that - I believe you get a free bottle of oil with each oil change.

What if you buy a used 2013 550i with 75k on it?
Is there any coverage or protection for the new buyer?
I'd love a v8 6-speed BMW, but fear the engine problems.

A 2013 won't be a TU engine. But they do offer compensation for replacement, but I think at that mileage they maybe cover 50% at best.

I bought mine with 77k and had the motor replaced at 81k, luckily I purchased a warranty through my bank, so I paid very little out of pocket. The letter and whatever reimbursement they are offering really seems useless to be honest.

Did the TU engine solve most or all of the issues?
Sorry, it's just hard to sift through thousands of posts...

Yes, you don't want to give them an excuse for the excessive consumption other than the engine has a drinking problem.

You're 2010 750 is a N63 engine which is notorious for burning oil. This is not the same engine as the 2013+ 750s which received the TU.

I have a N63TU with 90K miles. Never burns any detectable amount of oil. Though when I purchased it used in 2019 with 50K miles I immediately put a 90C thermostat on it. Its been oil burning and leaking free.

How much did the 90c thermostat and install cost. I don’t feel like doing the work right and would want someone else to do it.
Or how long did it take to install.

i've done the install 4x and its a huge pain in the a$$. I've done it on a n62/s63 and n63tu v8. The problem is BMW stuck a bolt on the bottom of the t-stat that takes 1/4" wrench and you can only turn like 1/20th of a turn at a time and have to do it completely by feel.

Anyway, there are a couple of sources for low temp t-stats. I like this one. https://www.bavlogic.com/?tag=coller-thermostat

I also have purchased the ECS Hamburg Tech one and it was defective and not recallibrated. So I had to pull it off and do the job again....

Anyway I paid the dealer to do the job the second time and they did it for 1 hour of labor. Or less if they are doing work in that area.

But I have an n63TU that dosen't smoke or drink any oil, and I've not had to replace any plastic lines that have turned to crap in the engine bay.

I also keep the battery new and topped off in the car. If your battery gets old or low, your car will not run the cooling pumps after shutdown and that will kll your turbos and plastic lines much more quickly along with seals. Do not let your battery get low, the N63TU its recommended to replace the battery every other oil change. The N63 is every oil change. Folks who do not maintain their batteries either by charing it up or replacing as recommended by SIB will see these engines die a lot sooner.
