2014 75,xxx miles, I have the drivetrain malfunction, 1/2 power and CEL. I get the following codes:
P01C8: Fuel Rail/System pressure too low - bank 2 P0300: Random/Multiple Cylinder misfire detected P0305: Cylinder 5 misfire detected P0306: Cylinder 6 misfire detected Car shakes pretty bad at startup but stabilizes after about 5-8 seconds. I think banks 2 and 5 are in coinciding sides, which can be explained by a bad HPFP and I think 6 could be that it was already bad before this major problem started, as car would sometimes (but very very few times) feel a little sputtering at startup but never gave me a check engine light or Drivetrain malfunction; I shouldn't have ignored this, but what can I do about that now. EDIT: that paragraph above is wrong. I somewhere looked at a diagram that showed the cylinders In random order, but all 1-4 cylinders are on the passenger side, and 5-8 are in the driver side. I mixed up banks with cylinders too... bank 2 on driver side. so, all along the problem laid in bank 2 and cylinders 5 and 6. So, the problem started after a ramp into the freeway where I got a little throttle heavy, more like WOT. after that, right away I noticed something was wrong, pulled to the side and car started shaking, and now I am here. My main problem here, and the reason why I am posting this is because I cannot find the right part for the HPFP for the N63TU variant. ECS tuning has about 3 available, ranging from $280ish all the way to $1,200ish and are both described to be only for the N63 engine. ANY help will be greatly appreciated!!! |

OP this sounds exactly what happened to my late 14 550i.
The dealer replaced the HPFP under the service bulletin Also i had all coils and spark plugs replaced. Covered partially under my warranty I purchased. Even after all of that the car still stalls at cold start while turning. Go fig. It never was able to throw a code to detect what was going on. It drove me crazy so I traded it , lost money, but gained my BMW happiness back. It had 77k on it when I dumped. We obviously see the N63 engine , etc. is horrible . BMW replacing engines after months for waiting for one...issues creep up again. Burning oil, top off every 500 miles, etc. Fuel injectors-awful. Anyway I'm done with it. Moving on to my M235i. Make America (BMW) great again! |

That's a bummer. I am really hoping that once I put the new pump and do a full coil pack and spark plug change everything will be good. I enjoy this car too much, the torque, all the sounds that engine gives me, I don't want give up on this one! What do you think about your new car? I never thought about downsizing that much! |

My wife have had several BMW's over the years. We like HP so 550i was our sweet spot. I of course preferred the smaller 3 series. Had a F30, great car, EBII and very fun. Got rid of it---go fig. Bounced around a little , picked E92 335xi , had fun tuning it, which is incredible but my son has it believe it or not but I miss it a little.
After picking up the 550i last March it's been nothing but trouble. I lost my patience and the fun in driving a BMW so I wanted something light and fast! Didn't feel like a M3/M4 yet as I felt it was too stiff and hard so I opted for something completely different and unknown hence the M235i. It put the fun back into driving as its currently stock … for the moment. I would need to work on the suspension a bit and tune it but I may hold off. It's great for now since I'm still in the honey moon stage so maybe down the road. Plus it's CPO so don't to ruin the warranty. I hope you 550 works out its kinks and hiccups. It's just a poorly designed engine with a multitude of problems that seem endless. My wifes 14 550xi is ok at the moment with 69k on it. Just replaced 2 coils so far. No issue like mine was having so fingers crossed. Good luck!! |

So was yours, the one you sold, an n63tu as well? I noticed you said late 2014 build, but I didn't know they had that service bulletin for the n63tu, I thought it was only for the N63. I even looked up my VIN to see if anything came up and nothing! |

I actually bought mine with 55k on it but I forget when the actual build date was so I dont recall if it was just the N63 or next engine. Nonetheless, I'm happy again!

Those are not BMW codes you've listed their generic OBDII codes. I'd recommend you pull the actual bmw codes using ISTA or BMW Carly etc. That way you can get what is specifically wrong. Could be fuel rail pressure sensor, rail leak, bad injectors, pumps, etc. The actual codes wiil tell you more.

So with the electrical and implausibility, looks to be a bad fuel pressure sensor. I'd start with that.

The sensor is located at the end of the fuel rail. Make sure the pumps have a return policy, I’ve never heard of them failing on this engine.

forgot to update. driver side HPFP was bad. that's why I got codes for bank 2 cylinders 5-6.
my luck, I ordered 2 new ones and I happened to put a new but defective in the place of the old and defective one! So, I thought the problem was somewhere else. finally I ended swapping the two new ones and the problem moved to bank 1, cylinders 1-3. HPFP was bad! I got a replacement and car feels as good as always. no placebo effect here, unfortunately thanks Thecaslte for all the help, I appreciate! |

seems like my HPFP issue was an isolated one since I haven't seen any other TU model have the same issue, at least here in the forum. I would say buy with confidence and get a nice exhaust you won't regret it! |
