I've been thinking about these new MFID images… BMW are extremely clever, not to say cautious, when it comes to introducing innovative technologies to their models. I think everyone here would agree on this.

Bearing this in mind, what do you think is the probability that they will keep physical hands on top of these MFIDs? The only incompatibility I see is with the sport variation where you'd have the needles on top of the speed and gear indication, but as far as the other displays are concerned (eco pro and comfort) having a physical needle on top of those graphics would be great.

Last thought… Do you guys think this will be an option alternative to the current black panel with the arches open at the 6 o'clock position or will this be compulsory if you choose to have the HUD? For those of you who are familiar with BMW's schedules, when should we expect to see these innovations in the official catalogues, car configurator, etc?

FYI, today I contacted my vendor in Germany and they still haven't receive official word on these changes for the F10/F11, so I cannot change my order yet. Can't wait to include these MFIDs in my MY2013 F11, though!

Good point, it's the best seller in the "flagship" segment of their range and as you say, the bread and butter.

No, the 5 series is not the flagship model. That would be the 760Li as a flagship is generally known as the best, largest, and most expensive model in the fleet. The M5 could be considered the flagship of the M cars currently, but that will change once the M6 is available and again when the M6 Gran Coupe arrives. The 5 is also not the bread and butter of the brand, the 3 series is. That said, it doesn't make the 5 any less important of a model.

Not only am I wrong but I guess Adrian Van Hooydonk was also wrong in an interview I read.
I have a different view on what a flagship (or core) product is… You say it is the largest, quickest, most expensive, I say it is the one that is a best match with what the brands stands for. When I think of BMW I never think of a 760Li boat, even if it is the most expensive, the biggest, but not necessarily the best…

I would certainly agree that the 5 is a core product representing what the brand stands for, but not fitting the definition of a flagship as I have understood it.

I'm just curious, which interview with Adrian Van Hooydonk was it? I'd like to check it out.

I read it in the most recent German catalogue that BMW did for the 5 series. I will take a snapshot when I am back in Germany and will send it to you, if you want it.

Fair point, I guess I'm leaping forward to when it's standard....just a matter of time.

I love all digital displays like this (the MB S and CL-Class have it, the Aventador has it).

Hopefully BMW will roll it out to all their other cars.

Love the idea of changing instrument cluster....thank god the orange/red is back....hated the blueish/white display. Hope they incorporate it in to M cars also.

+1 to this

I've noticed they don't always incorporate changes into M cars. Hopefully they've stopped this trend. (Generally speaking, it's been exterior changes, and often because it'd require new crash tests, etc., because it alters the frontend or backend.)

I'm not a fan of Japanese exterior vehicle styling...but that LF-A like interior display is pretty sweet. Some japanese styling is very tasteful.

Im not for breaking tradition with the orange clusters. Its like taking away the signature twin kidney grills. Its part of tradition IMO.
