!~Official Photo Critique Thread~!

I noticed a lot of us that love shooting photos are starting threads in the photo section just to get critiques on 1 or 2 photos. I stole this idea from another forum and thought it would be great for here.

So here are the rules

1) You must critique the newest post (although you may critique more then 1 if you like) and then you can post your image (only 1 per post) for others to critique.
2) When you critique, your comment must be insightful (meaning nothing simple like, NICE PHOTO! or Looks good). Try to give some positives AND negatives.
3) Please dont post HUGE photos that are 1000x1000 pixels. But at the same time, try not to post extremely low res images.

Dont be hurt if someone gives you negative comments. We're all here to learn and if you don't hear what your doing wrong, how can you get better.

Have fun

NOOB! Read the original post!

As far as the photo goes. I like the angle of the photo and obviously i love the effect (since i edited it), but one thing that really bugs me is how dark the right side of the car is. I wish i could dodge more of the darkness out. Oh and i also wish the "stop ahead" writing on the ground was photoshoped out. It would give the setting a more abstract feel.

I like any photo that can create the feeling of motion. Can be tough to keep the subject in focus / sharp. Good job, especially considering the flat / low light from the overcast sky.

I also like that you have something happening in the foreground (the car) and the background (the blur of motion). I'm trying to work on that in my photography - I always have one or the other, but rarely both.

The only real room for improvement I see is in the contrast - you have concrete, a gray sky and a silver car. A red or yellow car would be ideal here - something to really make the foreground pop.

Hey Laurance:
Is that a photoshop? The more I look at that the more the car looks like it was added in. I think it looks slightly too small for the road. Also if it's not its a DAMN good job of getting no blur on the car at all. On the flip side if it is a photoshop you did a nice job of matching lighting from the road and the car!
Great job in either case!

Thanks for the compliment and critique.
Nope, the car was not photoshoped in. Yea, i have heard a few comments that the car is too small for the road but i dunno, different strokes for different folks i guess, i really like it this way. There is another photo i took on the same day that is a close up motion shot of the car.

You can find the thread with the photos here

Post above:
1st pic seems like an average picture.
2nd pic I like the trailing lights but the lights on the right side are a bit distracting.
3rd pic I think I like this picture the most, it seems the most crisp although there's nothing in the scenery that really stands out.

My pic:
Canon G7, P&S, no tripod (on vacation!), and no photoshop (no skills). Thanks.

Very cool - I like the old with the new. A little remote fill-flash on the old building would be cool, but requires some expensive equipment.

I'm usually all about capturing that perfect image, and then keeping it as true to the original scene as possible. However, I had this pic from a shoot last Friday night, and started messing with it in CaptureNX. Kind of a surreal look. Not sure how I feel about it...

Turbo fan;
I kind of like it! While the sky is very blue it isn't shocking because it doesn't take up too much of the picture. I also like the reflections you captured on the trunk. Interesting shot. My only question is why is there so much white around the trees? Especially the one that is directly over the fin.

Turbofan- Im not really sure if i like the photo or not. The colors are REALLY "blotchy" (i don't know how to say it any other way). Specially when you look at the upper right side of the photo in the sky and also on the car. It looks like your sensor is dirty or someone smeared the colors.

bartman- i like the composition of the photo itself. I guess its the hazzyness of the weather that bothers me. But then again, it is the fog and the haze that sets the mood of your photo. I personally suck at taking photo of nature and things of that sort so sorry if i can critique much on it.

Yeah, I'm a little so-so on it. Some of the color is blotchy because I had to compress the photo so badly to get it under the file size limit. If you see it in full 12-bit color, it's very smooth.

As to the white around the trees, that's due to how I got the sky so blue. Because of the large black region in the composition of the photo, it over-exposed the sky. I don't have a gradient filter yet, so I can't really correct for it. I added the blue to the sky, and then started fudging with things.

The colors are a little over the top due to the way I did the post-processing. That, and the jpeg compression algo is also what created the "smudged sensor" look.

I usually look for the ultimate in sharpness and faithful color reproduction in my photography. But in playing with this photo, it started to take shape in a kind of "pop-art" interpretational kind of photo. I appreciate the feedback. I know it's tough to evaluate, it's not a very common technique with photograpgy, and I don't know that I'm any good at it.

Wow! These are really amazing shots! They look very professional, and given the limited amount of color you had to work with, I think you really pulled these off quite well. I love the ring around the ignition button in the first picture. It has a nice amount of contrast. My favorite is most likely the dashboard shot because I like how you focus on the DTC button...it's a special button that should stand out on its own like that.

is that shine on the shift knob photoshop or is that a real light reflection?
