Not to hijack the thread but where in NC? We have property in the Asheville which we will build in a few years...

You are correct about property damage and storms are but one source of potential casualty losses, along with roof, pipe and a/c leaks, burglaries, fires, etc.. Insurance is expensive but necessary. Closer to the coast = greater risk and higher cost. My wife and I put a deposit on a condo in western NC and plan to spend most of our summers there beginning next year. I’m not worried about leaving our primary residence unattended. We have impact glass, live inland and have insurance.
Thanks that's valuable advice, my parents were looking at Sumter County, Florida, which is nice if you're 65+ and golf or Tarpon Springs since that's where are the Greeks go.

Downtown Asheville. New condo construction to be completed in winter / spring 2019, assuming storm doesn't result in area flooding or building supply disruptions. Where in Asheville are you building? (We visit annually.)

Just south, closer to the airport in the Cliffs at Walnut Cove. Have toyed with the idea of a condo but went with the lot as we enjoy the outdoors and the mountain views. Got it pretty cheap a few years ago when the real estate market in the area was still depressed. Prices have moved up nicely now so who knows, might sell and swing back to the condo idea. But as I tell my wife, who knows where the world will be in 3-4 years!

Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy was late October 2012 and that wrecked a lot of south shore long island as well as beaches

I think Sandy had more of an impact on Ontario than South Florida. I don't recall any impact from Sandy here, although clearly that was major impact up the coast.

Edit: I looked up Wilma, which was the worst impact on us where we live, and it was also late October. So yes, into late October, not early October.

Yes I was talking in NY, not necessarily down south. Either way it was a serious storm late late in the season

The tidal surge of Sandy was bad. So many people ignored the evacuation orders because there were a few false alarms the year before. I lived right outside the evacuation zone. My sweetie is LEO, I will never forget the calls coming in on his radio that night, I get chills just thinking about it. So many people stranded begging for help - in their attics as the water rose and kept coming.
On their roofs and the FD couldn't get to them because of downed power lines in the water. 5 blocks away people died. A wave literally overtook the house and pulled out a couple and their daughter. The father and daughter died, mother survived. The aftermath was surreal. I was only out of power for a few days, no property damage but within walking distance the devastation was unbelievable.

And that was a quick storm, she blew in and out. People - please leave.....
If you stay and need help, they may not be able to get to you. It's not worth it.

Be safe

both are excellent resources. Living in FL, I check both every day (along with NHC) during hurricane season. If you are in an evacuation zone, get the heck out of dodge. A CAT 4 hurricane can and will kill you.

Thoughts go out to everyone in its path.

Unfortunately, this looks even worse this a.m. Obviously a major coastal impact expected but also looking more and more like high risk of flooding far inland in places prone to flooding, with rivers, not used to major rain, etc. Hopefully things don’t turn out as bad as they look right now, everyone near the coast has evacuated and everyone in its path is finalizing preparations now.

It's crazy. A 13 ft storm surge is absolutely bonkers. 3 foot storm surge is devastating.... Hurricane Sandy in NY was about 6ft-7ft and it was hundreds of millions in damage to long island alone.

GTFO of there if you're anywhere near there people, that is nothing to play with if you value your life.

long island wasnt the only place that suffer with damages.
Certain parts of Brooklyn, and Queens were flooded, trees down, no power for weeks, no gas either.

Yeah, we’re getting a bit more nervous here in inland SC as well.

Of course. Technically, they are still on long island. Just a different county....

We're just happy it isn't heading further north. We've already had record amounts of rain in my area this year. The ground feels like a saturated sponge.

My understanding is that 2018 is already the wettest year on record in Wilmington, NC.

Looks like they are going to shatter that record.

One suggestion for those in the path inland (anyone on coast should have already evacuated) who might be at risk of losing power: get some ziplock gallon and quart freezer bags, fill about 2/3 full with water, zip shut and put in freezer today. You will get blocks of ice that last longer than ice cubes. Surely they won't last days, but is something easy to do with low cost / effort.
