Looking to buy used 550i
Can I get you guys' opinion on this car I'm looking to buy?
2014 550i with 37k miles for 33,9 Going in between 550i, M5, and M3. Unsure which to get. Love the power of the Ms but don't think it's worth paying the premium as this will be my daily driver. From what I've read the 2014+ 550s have less issues than prior 550s? Apart from the normal wear and tear items, any special maintenance I should plan for if I purchase this car? http://atcm.co/S2PVDP/1d7b9951 |

I live in a largely congested area (Hawaii) and I battled the same thing. I have a '13 550xi and it has all the power I need. You can make the M5 power with the 550 via JB4 and downpipes and what not for less money than the M5 price. Granted, if you are looking for that M5 'badge' of glory, then anything less than the M5 you won't be happy with or always wanting the M5. Get what you want, but the 550 scares me just fine. lol I can't comment about the M3 unfortunately.

Looks like you'd be owner #3. Why does the current owner want to sell after only roughly 22 months? I would suspect the car has been run HARD due to the Dinan stage 2 addition.

The only real issues involving the 550i's are the N63 motors and valve seals. I definitely recommend letting the car idol for about 10-15 minutes and give it a good rev make sure it doesn't spit out smoke from the exhaust. I wouldn't be surprised if the tune wore the seals down.

From what I am reading it seems that the 2016 build f10s have the n63b4402 but their seems no clear answer. All the class action lawsuit and sites on n63 progression state that they made the tu until 2015 and then in 2016 supposedly the trans was updated and so was engine. The trans I assume is the 8hp75 vs 70 bit the engine is very confusing cause if it is the case then a 2016 late build f10 is the way to go. This would be just as reliable as a g30 i would think plus if xdrive would have hydraulic steering.

you live in Houston, get an M5. I went with a 2016 550 X-drive over a similarly priced 2014 M5 because I wanted/needed AWD in the northeast. Had I been anywhere that snow was rare, I would have gone M5.
That said, a 2014 550 should have the N63TU, not the N63. While many say the TUs are more reliable, it is debatable. Some people still having oil consumption issues with even the G30 M550s and there is an open lawsuit against BMW for this. While my 550 burns some oil, it is not a significant amount so far. I basically have to add 1-2 quarts at around 5k miles (I have been doing my oil changes at 6000-7500 intervals). |
