Cupholder LCI vs. Pre LCI FYI
I purchased my ’14 M5 a year and a half ago with a broken cupholder. I finally got around to purchase and install a new one but noticed the one I had bought was different than my broken one. Pre LCI is different with more moving parts and different cupholder sizes between the right and left holders with the right being a bit deeper. LCI cupholder is fixed and both holders are the same size. Took a little while to install as you have to remove center console and remove and reinstall a few connections but a nice little afternoon project. This is for a DCT as I believe the manual has the cupholders in a different spot but don’t quote me on that. I did see some older threads but nothing comparing them side by side and posting this if anyone needs to replace theirs and wants to avoid the mistake I made.

PreLCI cars cannot accept LCI cup holders without replacing the air duct under the console.
The LCI cup holders sit deeper than PreLCI and the airducting for the rear, caters for this and angels slightly differently. Atleast on non m pre LCI cars, this is NOT a straightforward swap |

Interesting. The old cup holder is the source of many squeaks for me and is annoying. I would love to replace this in my 2012 528i, but doesnt sound like thats possible

Was there a DIY or instructions for this? My travel mug will just fit into the holder, but the 4 fingers interfere with me pushing it down. I had to create a thin plastic sleeve to help funnel the bottom of my cup into the hole and push the fingers in. I want to pull it out and remove the fingers on one side then put it back....

I had one of those fingers collapse into the arm. I had the spring so I figured I would try and repair it myself. I couldn't find a way to disassemble the cup holder so I just had it replaced under the CPO warranty. |
