17" OEM => 20"356=> back to 17"OEM
It's a pitty!
I had changed my 17"oem rim to (245F 275R) 20" oem 356 with bridgestone S001 on my 528i F10 and changed back to 17" oem within one week. The weight of 17"oem rim with RFT 225 weight similar as (245F 275R) 20" 356 with bridgestone S001. I don't know why my 528I with the new 356 and S001 is much less accerelated (40% less) and difficult( 30% difficult) to brake than with the oem 17" rim. It's seem loaded with 3 big fat men in my 528i And very noisy and bummpy. 30% more There is no reason why I kept this 356 rim accept the outlook. The look is really very beauti. But the performance is really hard to accepted. So I prefered to keep the orignal 17' oem. It was just changed back today. After that, it is much comfort now . Do any brother had the similar experience as me ? Last edited by BMMW; 06-01-2011 at 10:39 AM.. |

Bro, you gotta be kidding.
You got mlai's old rims? Or are they new? Mustta lost a bit of money. The 356 though similar in weight with your stock, but you got much wider tires especially the rear. I figure that's why you got sluggish acceleration and maneuvering. Unless you have a beast like mlai's 550. That's why I always suggest you guys to get forged wheels, or with limited budget like me, get the flow formed. Unsprung weight is major factor for your car's performance. Another thing is Bridgestone S001, my tire guy told me it's quite noisy and harsh, but I won't say 30% harsher. May be your tires have not break-in yet. Go for Pilot super sport, Pzero and you won't go wrong. I have the Advan sport, It is noisier than the RFT, but the ride comfort I say only 10-15% harsher. Still very comfy for my standard, even my wife.

Franky, my 528i was changed to 356 rim already before I charted with you both. At that time, I also wondered Mlai's old one was came to mine or not ?! Anyway, it is not the important. The important is that really no good. By the way , I really want to try drive yr car to find out that if it is same acceletation with the 17"oem and the same brake effect or not? Since , my friend told me that even the weight is less with the forged material, the wider tire and bigger rim size is surely not same acceleration and brake effect as the small size rim as 17". The only advantage is more grip. |

I didn't choose it . My impression is that the I-forged one is really light weight but the price is really expensive. It was cost hkd$11,000 each .. |

Serious? I did not notice any difference going switching to 5lbs less weight rims from 17'RFs.. and they about 5-6lbs lighter than your combo
according to calculations, 10lbs per wheel should result in about 0.1s difference in 0-100kmh times.. so to feel like 3 fat guys (=250kgs) the wheels need to many times the weight thats what the science says at least, don't know how this meshes with your actual experience.. But anyways I am still interested in what a lighter combo can do, perhaps i will try a pair of super light 18's if feel like burning some money especially our 528 should notice a much bigger difference with weight but probably that is what is causing my breaks to squeek.. anyone else got noiser brakes after changing rims? |

This time experience and my knowledge make me know that even the weight of the rim is same , the weight more close to the center of the wheel is more easy to be spined up and stop than the weight far away to the cener!

Exactly! That's where rim design comes into play! Can't really quantify the improvement in feeling, but you definitely feel it!

In the future , I think only the 17" or 18" with much lighter rim will be consider! 19" and 20" will not choose any more for my 528i! 528i is no sufficient power to wear them!

Go get real forged rims BMMW. Some 19" and 20" are under 20lb each. Ultra light. 17" and 18" look way too conservative. May be we can do a drag race. See if your stock can out run my 20", just kidding.

Hey count me in! I wanna watch too
But kidding aside, I think it really depends on the wheel. Mlai tried both F14 and 356 and he can tell the difference. I know Mlai has V8 under his hood but even RC3 with his 528 doesn't have this problem. I haven't driven my car with the 20s long enough to confidently make a statement but so far, no issues with acceleration nor braking. |
