Is this a spring collapse?

Was driving on the highway this past weekend and experienced a sharp dip (not a pothole)... once going over it i heard a BOOOOOF and thought i blown out a tire, pulled over to the shoulder and took a look and it looked like the rear driver side Spring collapsed... thoughts?

This seems pretty rare, but could be something else. My mechanic is taking a look at it this weekend to diagnose, obviously anxious, what do you think?

I do have H&R springs installed.

It does look like a spring related issue. Strut would not make it come that low and any arm will make the wheel bend a certain direction

Yup, your spring probably "slipped" down. At that point, your strut is likely blown as well.

Will post pics once I’m at a computer, but it was a knuckle collapse, completely stripped from the wheel hub. 😪

WAT?!? Wow, I can't wait to see pictures of this.

When you hit the sharp dip did the car bottom out? Were the bump-stops still installed on the shocks?

Shocks still good, and yes car bottomed out immediately. Was still able to move, didn’t lose control but the wheel was pressed up against the body. Car was repaired, knuckle fixed with new wheel hub.

Ah, looks like the bolt that holds the shock to the knuckle broke off.

This is interesting. That bolt has a very high torque spec (it's apparently very hard to remove). I wonder if it was under-torqued when installed, leading to a fatigue failure?

I would consider having the bolt on the other side replaced, and having the torque on both sides verified. My $.02

Doesn't look like the bolt failed - looks like they were in the middle of disassembly when the photo was taken.

chip3130, can you confirm if this is a pic of the failure, or during disassembly? If during disassembly can you confirm the point of failure (i.e. were there other failed components not shown in these pictures)?

Blue Angel is correct. This photo is of the car on lift for initial inspection. Bolt failed.

Thanks for clarifying!

Looks like that bolt is supposed to be torqued to 250 Nm (184 ft-lbs), assuming the member who posted the info is correct:

Sounds about right. Since it's tough to get to I can see why someone might not take the time to torque it properly, which could lead to a fatigue failure. Scary stuff!

Can confirm that it is 250nm, and can confirm it's a bitch to get to. It took me 2 days to torque it to spec because I was so gassed after installing my coilovers and I needed rest. You need to take off the rear toe arm to get any realistic amount of swing on the torque wrench. You basically have to bench press the car if you don't have a lift lol

Thanks for the advice! My coilovers just arrived so I'll be installing them soon.
