Buying a F10

I've been looking at F10's for about a month now to replace my E92. I narrowed my search down to 4 cars. Im getting a car this week and I need advice on what to get.

1. 2014 528i 44k with 6 months of warranty left. Msport with premium package

2. 2014 535d 48k fully loaded tech, premium, assist etc. Its got every option checked

3. 2015 528i 31k base model

4. 2012 535i 30k Msport and premium and tech. Oldest model, no warranty left and old idrive system

I'm leaning towards the 2015 because of the warranty left. But deep inside I want the 535d. It just scares me that I only have 2k miles left in the warranty. With what I've been reading on the problems on the diesel engines and if something breaks I'm screwed.

I would love to hear your opinions on this Thanks!

From your response, its obvious that you want that 535D. Thats about what millage I bought my car. I bought an extended warranty from the dealer before the factory one. You must get the extended one before factory one ends or less its going to cost a lot more. I paid $3k for my extended warranty which extended it 3 year or 100k miles. Factory that into your price when you purchase the car.

Get the 535d and go to the BMW dealer and get the same warranty they offer CPO (I believe it's called the BMW Gold Package)

There's been quite a few on here with N55's that have threw a rod. So the risk is not far off on either.

My vote too goes for the one you really want (Diesel) and pay for extra warranty. Few thousands at this price point shoudn't really be deal breaker, just get the car you like the most.

The 535D is the only one of those 4 I'd recommend -- and it happens to be your preference.

Really?? Links??

I've got 2; 2012 with ~82K miles and a 2014 I bought about 3 months ago and now has almost 29K miles. No problems with either...

Is the 535d a M Sport, if not keep looking as this package is a must imo...

It's a very reliable engine though, not heard of any significant failures. The one major consideration is that the glow plugs (and possibly the control unit) need changing from 50k miles onwards. These can get stuck and if one breaks getting them out you're looking at a big bill to get this sorted

dont get the 528i. I suggest you stick to the 535i.

the 2011 528i did have a naturally aspirated 6, and you can pick up one of those for a ridiculously good price and pimp it out.

Well over 2million F10s have been produced and I've only seen one or two threads on this forum concerning a thrown rod. Chances are in everyone's favor that this is not a common production issue with non-M variants.

If you want to talk about rod bearings, head over the ///M forums. S54, S62, S65, and S85 engines are all plagued with a chance of lower connecting rod bearing failure. I've owned them all and the fear is real!

Never said it was an issue, just said there are recent cases of N55's (not just F10's) that have thrown rods or blown their engines. Just the same for the N63. Just stating to the OP that the risk is nearly the same with the N55 and the 535d in terms of reliability concern.

I know all bout the Rod Bearing issues that plaques those engines. I used to own a '08 E60 M5. The S85 had many other issues that plaqued it, throttle actuators, idle actuators, VANOS, rod bearings. The SMG had its fair share of issues too. That is my least favorite BMW I've owned.

I bought a 2014 535d in December and haven't spent a moment regretting it.

It's a terrific car whether you feel like loping along on the freeway in economy mode and getting 38 mpg at low rpm's or hitting Sport and feeling the torque propel you like an nutty locomotive.

No issues at all in first 5k miles.

the s85 and s65 engine family revs to 8000RPM, rod bearings are an issue with any engine designed to operate at such a high speed. the rod bearings were also apparently too tight for 10w60 oil, and that 10w50 works better but no thinner.

rod bearing failures on normal engines like the n55 happen, but are very well and almost certainly resulted from driving aggressively with a 0w oil in the engine. use 5w40.

The 0W is only a 0 weight when the oil is cold (W after all stands for winter). As it warms up it "morphs" into whatever the higher number is. In SoCal we can run a straight 30 weight (no "Winter" weight needed) with no issues.

I always use what the manufacturer recommends as they have lots of people with lots of letters after their names to make sure the oil formulation is correct for the longevity of the engine. MOST manufacturers these days design at least a 150K engine life. Obviously good care and proper fluid changes will increase that.

0w oil is a physically thinner oil then 5w, meaning it cannot physically "morph" into a thicker oil which is not. thick oil protects your rod bearings at operating temperature and especially during high abuse.

5w40 would be great for you if you drive aggressively.

what brand of oil do you use?

I've used 5W-30 in all my BMW's and never had any engine issues. I'm confident BMW knows whats best for their engine, they are savvy and top performers in many of the famous performance races around the world.

I use BMW 5W-30. The brand doesn't matter, it's the level of specification that matters and most oils sold in America don't meet that. Majority synthetic oils are classified ACEA-1 and BMW recommends ACEA-3. Only a few oils are BMW approved in America, and I still don't prefer to use them because it's either LL-01 Castro Syntec 0W-30 or Mobil 1 0W-40. I prefer not to cheap out on oil and just use what BMW sells, so I order it from Tischer in bulk.

BMW recommends 5w30 or 5w40, either works fine. I wouldnt use a 0 weight

castrol and mobil 1, especially mobil are shit oils and I would avoid them. there are non LL approved oils costing half as much which provide more protection, like shell rotella. I would stick to liqui moly or motul.

I have a quart of Mobil1 LL in my trunk right now...

Sold a car recently that I used Mobil1 exclusively (after the free 12K mile oil changes) with 10K-14K or yearly oil changes. Still running great at over 200K miles.
