Upgraded Sound System recommended for F10 ?
Just put in an Order for a 520D F10.
The sound system as standard sounded good when I played a CD in the showroom, would anybody reccomment the upgrades to the sound system there is a Business Speaker system as an option for €500 or a dolby Pro surround system for €1050 is it wort going for either of these? |

This system includes four tweeter (two in the mirror triangles, two in the rear) and four mid-range speaker (two in the front doors, two in the rear) and two central bass speaker (under the front seats) and a Centre tweeter and a Centre mid-range unit in the dashboard. Your benefits: Full transparent sound with powerful bass and brilliant highs; Perfect stereo image in all seats; Fuller sound at low volume; Speed independent sound quallity. HiFi speaker system Professional (S0677) This high-end speaker system with DIRAC signal processing and surround mode includes 16 speakers and a digital amplifier (600 W amplifier power, multi channel capable). Compared to the HiFi speaker system, better optimised Central and tweeter with aluminium membranes leading to a significantly more sophisticated sound. The harmoniously applied spatial sound is created by the addition two in dashboard center speakers for high and mid-frequencies. Your benefits: Digital audio signal processing for processing of 2-channel stereo signals; Excellent sound, expressive bass and brilliant transfer of high-frequency range; Perfect surround sound on all seats from stereo signals; More powerful of sound at low volume; Speed independent sound quality. Some good notes attached, for E60, from the link below but for the E60 http://forums.5series.net/topic/5975...-on-5-series/? Also new doc from bmw on HiFi speaker system Professional details.

I heard the HiFi speaker system and thought it was just OK. Ordered the Hifi professional, which i believe is the DIRAC based system.
Then again my home system is based on B&W 800 series speakers, but I don't think my standards were too high. Another thing--never play their CDs, always take you own CDs or Ipod and play that when auditioning whether its car audio or home audio. Last edited by akhter; 07-28-2010 at 06:22 PM.. |

Hi Akhter, I am in the process of ripping CD's for use in an F10 with Professional Navigation and the Professional Speakers. I am trying to get the best result possible. I am curious do you use a lossless format to rip your CD's? What import settings do you use? Thanks Paul |

@Feco,
Hi Feco, It sounds like you have the professional loudspeaker system, in the UK its described as having 16 Speakers and a 600W amp. Its option code 677. The Business Loudspeaker system has 12 speakers and is option code 676. Hope that helps Thanks Paul |

IMHO having had a 2 day test drive and plenty of time to belt out some seriously heavy music at serious volumes i thought the stereo was plently good enough... however i was told by the dealer that the stereo was "professional" not "business" as i had the "Professional Nav" unsure if thats true or not

@Lukeswarm,
Hi Luke, Page 55 of the UK brochure appears to imply the BMW Professional radio is standard on all 5 series. Its mentioned under need the speak package descriptions. So I think the dealer is right it is professional. Good to hear it sounds good ;-) |

Good spot, it is good enough in my view and loud enough to shake your change around in the ash tray :-)

If using ipod, apple lossless should work for ultimate sonics. If using USB, WMA lossless should be the best. |

@Akhter
Thanks for the feedback that's really helpful I have ripped everything as WMA Lossless and will generate a set of mp3's We couldn't tell the difference between the 320bit mp3's and WMA lossless. But if we do spot a drop in quality we can always go back to the lossless files via USB. I am sure November will come round quick ;-) Cheers Paul |

BMW Professional Radio has nothing to do with the quality of the sound. It just adds other functionality over the Business radio that was the standard in the E60. For better sound you need to order HiFi package or HiFi professional package.

Couple of points.
Nav There are 2 levels (pro or business). No change is sound quality one way or another. Stereo Radio Professional: Everyone has this (standard). Speakers a) base level (not available in US) is 4ch amp 6 speakers b) Hifi loudspeaker system (standard in US and Asia): 205w digital amp-12 speakers. c) Hifi professional: DIRAC based 600w 16 speakers. Connections a) AUX in (standard everywhere) b) USB in armrest (standard in Canada/Asia) c) bluetooth streaming |

I just took delivery of a BMW 535d SE F10 during November 2010, great car, let down by very poor standard speakers. Dealer quoted three times factory-fit charge to upgrade to HiFi Professional (factory fit is about £700). Does anyone know if I need to change the amplifier and stick with the standard 6 speakers, change only the speakers, or change both amplifier and speakers? Can anyone recommend a good fitter who won't ruin the car in upgrading and can do at a reasonable price?

I don't think the standard fit audio has an external amplifier so you'll need to add one yourself - whick means more work and expense.
You can change the speakers to higher quality units without adding an amplifier - but that won't be enough to upgrade the bass to the level of the professional system because it has two subwoofers beneath the front seats. Of course, volume levels will not be as high either. I'm afraid you'll have to take it to a place that will have to do extensive work. I've done it before with past cars and the sound quality will easily surpass that of the professional audio system - but at a cost. Some of these companies are used to upgrading the audio in expensive cars like Bentley's. One such company I've used in the past is Prestige Audio: http://www.prestige-av.co.uk/CarAudio.asp They can work to a budget so it's worth giving it a try. And while were discussing the HiFi, how on earth do you pause the stereo??? Pushing the volume nob on the stereo only mutes. Is there a way to pause using the buttons on the steering wheel?

My 535i also came with the standard audio system. But, I only see 5 speakers (2 in front doors + 2 in read dash + 1 center front dash). Can give the locations of your six speakers?... maybe I missed one. And I'm also working with my dealer to get a quote for any possible upgrades. We should be getting a reply from Germany soon on all possible options. Can you share what you got from your dealer, like what needs to be changed or added on your current system? Thanks! |
