F10 xdrive towing - is it okay or not?

Hello all,

I have an issue on my mind.. recently i had to tow the car (a F10 525d xdrive Automatic) and the guy who came to pick it up came with a truck which could only lift two wheels. And he said it's ok to raise the car from the rear. I didn't know if it's ok, but he insisted it's fine.

So the car was towed for 5 km with just the rear wheels lifted from the ground.
The engine was off and the transmission was in P.

When i got the car off the truck, i had a stiff steering wheel and some errors, but these seem to go. The real question on my mind is - could this have a negative effect on the transmission?

Thank you.

PS: the car was towed to a dealer, so i don't have acces to it the next few days.

Just an FYI…any info you need about your car is in the owners manual. And if you don’t have the universal paperback version in the glovebox…you can download a PDF version from the BMW website (or internet/google search) to any device you have (phone, tablet, laptop, desktop)…and there’s also a VIN specific owners manual embedded into iDrive.

AWD BMWs should NOT be towed from either axle…but should be put on a flatbed with both axles lifted off the ground.

Here’s an example of how easy it is to find info in the iDrive’s embedded owners manual using the KEYWORD search feature (where you just write (if you have touch pad) or select what you’re looking for…just as if you were looking in the rear index of the paperback version.

I searched using the word “TOW”.

SOME tow companies have dollies, but generally, as Qsilver7 stated, all 4 wheels need to be off the ground.

Ill say it would most likely only damage the clutches in the transfercase but that is my assumption. I bet the guy didn't realize it was an AWD car
