You didn't miss it, all it says is that the ActiveHybrid 5 makes for a "double-digit percentage improvement in fuel economy over the BMW 535i based on preliminary results."
Best regards, south

As a further note the gasoline engine's torque is going to be roughly constant (increasing linearly) in the mid range with low torque at the ends. The electric motor has a linearly decreasing torque with maximum torque at low RPM and minimum torque at peak RPM. Why don't they couple the N20 with the EM? Seems to make a lot more sense... But this is the same strategy as Honda had with the Accord Hybrid. They coupled a 20HP electric motor with their larger (240HP) V6 engine. They got marginally increased efficiency with marginally better performance. It didn't sell well... |

Hybrid... again... Oh well, At least it looks way better than ActiveHybrid 7 and X6.
I just hope one day I can see the title says "Official Premiere: BMW F10 535d" I think I have to wait for a while... |

If the technology doesn't add much weight and doesn't' mess up the dynamics of the car (near 50/50 weight distribution) then hail yeah!

Considering BMW's history of using the end user as the last link in R&D development...after you.

Coasting (engine switched off and decoupled) possible at speeds of up to 100mph.
Hell I can do that in my E90, I just have to get it up to 110 mph, then stick it in neutral. I wouldn't turn the engine off- but I'm coasting at 100! |

I was planning on my next car being an F10 535d. The Active Hybrid 5 makes me think that's not going to happen.

Nice car for those with consciences. But i'll stick to my V8 and drive it in a way where I get 13-14 mpg.

this will flop because it will be too expensive. like X6 Active Hybrid it will be too close in price to high performance and more exclusive cars (like M cars).
This car should be a 520d with lithium ion battery and cost like 528 or something. May be then. ![]()

Far be it from me to be presumptuous about BMW's strategic integration of introducing hybrids into their line up, but I wonder why the top down approach rather than introducing functional hybrids in an affordable chassis? Aside from that, the hybrid 5 series is just as sexy as the standard 5'er.
Best, Tony

The biggest shame about this vehicle is that the badge "Activehybrid 5" all over it.
From the extra badging on the rear quarter panel, to the door frames, I just think it's sad. Just what you need, a reminder everywhere you look that you're in a hybrid. Everything else about the car is just fantastic though. |

Sad to see BMW wasting it's time with a gasoline hybrid. When all's said and done, this car will probably be less efficient and not quite as quick as the new 315hp 535d available in Europe.
