Low Tire: Stop Carefully

So I keep getting this warning on my 2012 528i, for the drivers side rear tire. It initially did this once, but went away once I reset it (pressure was fine). Now it comes on and stays on even after I reset. Obviously something is wrong as I check the pressure and its fine.

Is there something wrong and what is the fix? I didn't think that there were any actual sensors or devices in the wheel, just the car sensing based on rotation.

Please advise. Thanks

There should be sensors in the wheels (attached to the valve stem). If they are original the battery(s) may be failing.

As stated above...yes, there are TPMS sensors in each wheel (see info below). And there's even more info at this link: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...ntrol/9hfSDy7x

Excellent, thanks guys! I suppose you change the battery during a tire change? Should be fairly easy for the tire installation place to do? I may have to live with it for a few thousand miles more as my tires are in decent shape right now. LOL!

They can break the bead on one side and change them.
It will rarely happen when you need new tires.

The batteries aren't serviceable. You will need a new sensor; or sensors. When you need new tires I would replace all the sensors as well.

I see, thanks. Does anyone know the part number? Is it the same for all 4 wheels, or different for front rear? Thanks again everyone

Just an FYI for future use...anytime you need the correct part nbr for your BMW...just use one of the online part databases. That way, if there are any changes (superceded part nbrs) or changes during the production run...you'll have the latest & correct part number based on your VIN (or build date). You can also click on the part nbrs to see older part nbrs that have been discontinued and see if they are retroactively compatible.

I recommend saving all 3 of the sites below...because sometimes one or more may be down for maintenance just when you need to look up info:
  1. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select
  2. http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/
  3. https://bimmercat.com/

{EXAMPLE: you need #2 & #3 if you look up the TPMS on the bmwfans.info site...click link below for more details & info}

The batteries tend to last ~8 years so if one failed probably time to do them all. You dont have to replace with OEM parts either. Shop around and get a good price on them, buy them and wait for your tire change to have them installed or even call your tire place (discount tire has a device that can communicate with the TPMS sensor) and see if they will check yours and cut you a deal if you buy with your next set of tires... The new ones will have to be reset to the car.

Do you know if matching the new sensors to the car is something the tire place can typically do, or does it require re-coding something in the car itself?

I believe the tire place can do it. They did it for my G37s so I would think they can do it for others.... but with BMW you never know... just give them a quick call and see what they say.

Ditto Lucky....the tire shops can activate the new sensors...then all that is needed is to go into iDrive and do the typical reset like normal.

This past December, I had new TPMS installed in my f06 winter wheel/tire set-up where the tires and sensors were purchased from Discount Tire but after installing sensors and mounting the tires to the wheels...the wheels weren't mounted onto the car at that time. I had to get other work done at another local automotive shop...and they were the ones that actually mounted the wheels...and activated and reset the sensors once all the wheels were mounted to the car.

For those that have purcahsed after-market ones, can you post which ones and from where? Tires are wearing down and I'll be ready to change in the Fall, so need to buy these now. Thanks

As mentioned above, when I purchased my winter tires from Discount Tire to mount them to a set of BMW wheels I had that didn't have sensors...I got a set of HUF sensors.

I would recommend again, to look up the 11 digit BMW part nbr specific to your car, then type BMW xx xx x xxx xxx (where x = actual BMW part nbr) into a google search box. This should pull up enough vendors to see what the price range is for the type of sensors you need. Then compare those to any offerings local vendors you trust...and they may even price match. Also make sure that whoever mounts the sensors has a tool to activate them if they need to be programmed.

Thank you. I found these. I suppose these would work?

https://www.tpmsdirect.com/BMW_5_Ser...12-04-hufm.htm

Update/Edit: I contacted the seller and they confirmed that this will work...plug and play. I'll likely change my tires in a few weeks and will report back
