iDrive Controller knob with 10 pin plug !?!? Unique in universe ?

My old iDrive controller broke down on 520d year 2011 and I buy another on Ebay and now I see that this new on has 4 pin plug and my s**t has 10 pin flat socket and 6 cable plug ! WTF is this ? People dont believe me when they see the photo of the plug on mine.

Can I retrofit this 4 pin or I must find 10 pin iDrive controller ? It says on part catalogue that I need 65 82 9 206 444.

Thanks

Did you ever figure this out? I got an idrive controller as part of a set of parts I picked up for a retrofit, and it has this same 10-pin socket you describe... What is the difference?

I was able to get my 10-pin iDrive controller to work with my 4-pin cable/car by just shoving the cable into the first 4 pins of the controller.
Probably not the best option.
For a 10-pin car, if you have a 4-pin cable scrap you can re-pin the first 4 pins from the 10-pin connector, as that is all that is needed for the controller to work.

Or maybe you could take a sharp knife to the 10-pin connector and chop off the rest of the pins (i've done this to other parts where I had a spare 20-pin connector in my parts bin but needed a 4-pin)

The rest of the pins go to the parking assist/ hill descent control/omnidirectional camera buttons on the center console, so those might stop working if you use a 4-pin controller.

Here's the 10-pin controller pinout:

If you decide that you need a controller with a 10-pin connector, I have one that I'm not using as I ended up getting a touch controller.

Hi vilord thanks a lot! Thanks for the info it’s a bit of a relief! However,
I’d really love to get that 10pin controller, how much would that be? We will have to ship tip to FL

Let me take a look at it to see what condition it is in, see if it has any blemishes. I'll send you a PM. Maybe we can just swap, as I could use a 4-pin for my bench setup

Folks, i know this is an older thread and also this info is particular to the F10, but if your car has a 10-pin Idrive controlled, your car is probably built prior to 9/11 and if that is the case, your idrive controller has 2 extra pins that are coming from the PDC and Camera/HDC buttons. The idrive controller with 10 pins is reading those buttons and converting them to CAN signals for the car to know the button are pressed. If your car is post 9/11 then your car came with the 4 pin idrive. Check up newtis.info for the wiring details.

the newer ICM which takes those signals from the buttons directly and hence your idrive will be one with 4 wires
