F10 Refuses to turn on Ignition

Hi all, was driving last night and stopped to get gas. Next thing I know, it wouldn't go back into pos 2 (when you click the start button)

Here's a link to show you what I mean. Does anyone have any idea? Had to get a tow and as far as I am aware, both my keys work and do get recognized. Since the car won't go into position 2, I can't hookup ISTA and see faults.

Did you put your fob against the steering column (by key marking on RHS) and try the Start button?

Quick update: I believe the ground strap on the transmission went bad (didn't jack up car to check yet) but I added some ground straps on the engine and it starts right up.

Please let us know what the root cause is when you figure it out! One of the ground straps on my wife’s E90 looks pretty crusty and I’ve thought I should replace it. My F10 is completely covered up so I can’t see these things coming!

It will be about a week and a half until I get underneath to do my timing chain, but I can easily verify that yes, it is my ground strap that was busted or tired. There's varying information on where that strap is located exactly but I'll find it. I know F10 535i N55 it's located on the transmission. No idea with your 535d.

If I disconnect the ones I added on the engine, the car will not start or even go into IGN 2 (KL15)

Happened to my friends E92 aswell! No crank once that strap goes as that is where the starter gets its ground from

Blue Angel Did my chain and inspected my ground strap. Was connected to my transmission right above the crossmember bracket and it was purple!

Corrosion got so bad that every time I touched it, it crumbled bit by bit. 2012 with 230k miles midwestern car!

Thanks for the update! We’ve got lots of salt here in Ottawa too, so sounds like something I need to plan ahead for. Thanks for the tip!!!
