Paint Correction Help

I am trying to get rid of some water spots and minor scratches. Used some Pinnacle swirl and scratch remover with a light-medium cutting pad and it didn't seem to help much. Do I need a medium-heavy cutting pad or a stronger rubbing compound? Or both? I am using a Porter Cable 7424 on speed 5.

I'd vote for a heavier cutting pad. Most BMW's have a harder paint (Aside from black). That's been my experience.

I have some experience using Wolfgang products, which I believe are similar to Pinnacle products. I also use the Porter Cable 7424xp on speed 5. My Wolfgang swirl remover does remove swirls, etchings, and light scratches with the orange 5" hex-logic pad. I just detailed my car a couple of days ago using this setup and it is swirl-free. My Portercable does not work so well with the orange Lake pads (the one with the dimples vice the hexlogic with the hexes). I'm always a little wary of increasing the strength of the cutting pad if you don't need to, so I'm curious what type of pads you are using. Also, how much pressure are you applying to the polisher when you use it? There was a knowledgeable detailer on this forum a little while back that estimated you should use about 9 pounds of pressure +/-. This, and the amount of pad deformation I see, are my guides to how much pressure I use.

Thanks for the replies! I am using Chemical Guys pads with the dimples. I will have to try the ones with the hexes. I am also probably not using enough pressure, I get nervous and do not press down that hard. How much of the pad compresses using 9 lbs?

I offer you this very informative set of videos from Junkman on removing scratches & swirls. He is the source of my information, and I have been following his advice with considerable success. His moto is, "technique beats product 365 / 7 / 24", or something like that.

My pressure guide is to see the edge of the pad curl up just a bit around the edge of the pressure plate under the pad while I am polishing, but not so much that there are wrinkles in the pad when I stop. I figure I add about 4 - 5 pounds of pressure to the weight of the PC7424, give or take. Per section, I do about one full pass left to right, with medium to light pressure, to spread out the polish over the work area. Then I do a pass going up and down (at full pressure) for the first 'cutting' pass. Then I repeat both the left to right and up & down passes at least one more time. At this point, you can see what the polish is doing, and if it seems to be drying out or 'flashing' (as explained in Junkman's videos), then you need to stop and clear the residue away with your microfibre towel. If the scratches are still there, then repeat. I find that usually one session per section (two passes in each direction) is enough most of the time. Junkman shows that you can press quite hard, and it is still very difficult to damage the paint with a dual action polisher like our PC7424. It is the single action rotary polishers that take quite a bit of experience and knowledge to use effectively. Pros use them because they work quicker, but the trade-off is that you can go too far with them. The PC7424XP polisher is a very safe device in the hands of a novice like me.

Good luck!

Which compound and pads do you guys recommend ? My F10 is Alpine white, looking for a high gloss finish.

I'm gonna have to recreate that thread that was referred to earlier in this thread since I can't edit my original post any longer but here's the video that you need to watch. After watching it, if you FULLY understand what you just watched, you will realize that you are asking the WRONG question.

I am limited to my office in the basement. Since COVID19 hit, I have been married to my computer, servicing users all over the place. Hell, some nights I fall asleep in my chair! My wife doesn't have to worry about me going anywhere because she knows that no other woman will put up with me. She's right.
