BMW M5 Brake booster retrofit on 550?
Hey guys,
I have bmw f10 2016 550 with new m5 calipers and brake pads/rotors and the braking isnt good even after numerous brake flushes. I was wondering, is it possible to install/retrofit a bmw m5 brake booster and m5 master brake cyclinder? Would it be a direct fit or would there be problems with software or other parts? |

Yes you can. I did the same with my 535i when installing the G11 M-Performance calipers and F01 760i brake discs.
For the MBC you'll have to change 1 brakeline going from it to the block in the wheel well. |

I swapped my calipers and rotors with 374mm ones and BMW 760i calipers
But I feel no change in brake force/distance. So solution is to change brake booster, master brake cylinder, and brake lines? My car is a 530d 2011, came with 348mm rotors. |

I've mentioned it in another thread, try coding the DSC correctly for the size of the rotors before switching the booster. I have felt the difference simply due to coding in a bigger or smaller caliper/rotor size. Worth a shot. The setting in DSC is called bresattle vorne, you can FDL code it using esys/launcher or other FDL coding agent

in Esys, if you select DSC for FDL coding, you will see a parameter for Bremsattle Vorne. Under it should be the multiple options/Sizes of the brakes. You can also see what it is currently set to. Change it to the size you have installed and FDL code the DSC. That should be all that's needed.

I've read similar threads for the F30 where they have several different braking setups available from the factory as options. Folks install fancy new 4-pot or 6-pot caliper setups and feel no difference. Code it for those calipers and they feel amazing. What happens if you just code it for the sportier configuration? If much-improved brakes feel the same until coded, would coding make the same brakes feel better? |

MY understanding is that these parameters control the pressure/fluid movement inside the system. So coding it without changing the actual hardware may change the feel and pad life, meaning it may wear out faster possibly.
For M5 use the 398x36 which is the diameter of the M5 front rotors. |

Tried the coding today. Definitely changes how the pedal feels a bit. It gets firmer earlier in the pedal travel.
The coding actually corresponds to your caliper, not your rotor. To explain what the code means - FNR-AL 60/36/374-76: FN: the supplier R: frame (?) AL: material of caliper 60: nominal piston size 36: nominal thickness 374-76: diameter See picture below for all options available to the F10. Since this is a F10, there never was anything available with dual pistons in the 40-44 size, so I settled for the 60mm single piston coding. Closest you'll get is the M4.42 coding, which corresponds to the E70 X5M calipers. You could probably change your vehicle type temporarily to get the exact correct coding, but that will take testing by a far braver soul than I

After driving a bit more, can definitely say the coding makes a pretty solid difference. The brakes feel a bit more predictable and a lot more communicative. Definitely try the coding before touching the brake booster and master.

Hinten is rear and vorne is front. Pick the proper coding the corresponds to your calipers. For non-M5 F10's, there is no M5 coding available, so just pick the ones closest to your caliper sizes. Fronts would likely be M4.42/36/395, and rears would likely be 44/24/370. You could potentially change your vehicle type for the F10 M5 just to code the DSC module, but again that is beyond the realm of what I am willing to dive into. Edit: Keep in mind, I did the G series 4 pot upgrade, not the F10 M5 upgrade.
