F10 550i decision
After owning Audi's and VW's for the past 15yrs I'm making my first foray into BMW. I've been researching for sometime and have decided the 550 provides what I'm looking for between comfort, size, luxury and performance. That being the case I have two 550i's I'm considering:
2014 CPO - Expires 3/2020 $37k 40k miles M Sport Executive Package Luxury Seating Package Driver Assist Package 2015 CPO - Expires 12/2020 $46k 39k miles M Sport Executive Package Luxury Seating Package Driver Assist Package As you can see both cars are equally equipped. The only difference being model year and warranty. The 14 seems like a no brainer considering that it's $9k less. The question is would I be able to warranty the car past 3/2020 if I wanted to? And is there any difference between the 2014 vs 2015 models? Being that this is my first BMW is the mileage on these cars a big deal? Wanted to get your feed back on these options. |

In Houston 12k + miles a year isn't all that uncommon. |

Personally, I would get the '14 and extend the maintenance (I paid $1950 at my dealer); ESPECIALLY the way the V8 drinks oil. Also, IIRC, the battery needs to be changed at every (or every other) oil change. I believe that's a maintenance item; someone correct me if I'm wrong. |

High Pressure pump replacement Fuel injector fault Oil sump gasket leaking (twice) Engine breather lines leaking Coolant lines, exhaust turbocharger leaking It has 40,103 miles The 2015 service records are all normal and no mechanical issues. 39,903 miles. It also has longer warranty available. I've been able to get them down on price based on the 2014 car. My last request is for $44k. |

I gotta say, even after owning several big and small block v8's in the past, I am totally satisfied with the N55. Has a nice thump, nothing ground shaking, but it does have some oomph. And the low end torque is pretty amazing. Add a tune for even more power.
I don't miss 8 bangers anymore. |

For the price, I'd get the '14.
You'll have a warranty so it wouldn't really matter. Just because the '15 hasn't had any work so far doesn't mean it won't have similar failures soon. The '14 you won't have to worry about the coolant lines (which WILL fail) My car had no major issues and then had its engine fail. So it's a hit or miss. |

Yes for 9k less i personally would take the '14. There were no changes between models and the packages are the same. As far as higher mileage N63tu's (the engine in the LCI F10 550)... it's still too early to tell. The N63's have a 'higher than normal' engine failures. There are like 6 members here that have had their engine fail. A shop that I was communicating with when I was diagnosing my car said he gets about 2-3 N63's a month with a motor that's toast or a timing chain that's broken. Hopefully BMW changed things up with the second rendition of the F10 550 engine. N63tu's just came out 4 years ago so people are just hitting the 50k mark. The V8TT is not BMW's specialty, their I-6 motors is its flagship though, those can take a beating. Last edited by SLVSRFR; 08-28-2017 at 09:56 PM.. |

Thanks for the input.
My search has gotten a little more complicated as I've now looked at a 16' 340i with 11k miles. That car is not CPO (warranty til 12/19) and is $39k I have found a couple other 550i's with less miles but not CPO. One for $39k 21k miles and $34K with 29k miles. Both 2014's with warranties that expire 2/2018 so I'd have to buy an extended warranty. |
