DIY - Magnetic holder and wireless charger for iPhone X

I realized I wanted (needed?) a magnetic holder for my iPhone X that I could snap into the vent of my 550i. The problem was that most if not all of the magnetic holders on the market made my iPhone X NOT charge wirelessly anymore, because of the magnet that you have to install underneath your iPhone case.

I was then recommended a product from a co-worker, that I ended up purchasing from Amazon. http://a.co/dDxPnfy

This is a magnetic holder/charger compatible with the iPhone X that has the capability to charge as well. They achieved this by using a super thin ring that installs on the back of your phone with 3M tape. It allows you to still use a phone case, and still wireless charge. Simple.

I was not even thinking of using it for charging. I just liked the ability to use a magnetic holder with an iPhone X, that still allowed me to wireless charge on one of the many wireless chargers I have at home and at work. I didn't want to use the charging wire, because I did not want the wire hanging down to the 12V charger by the cup holders, or to the one thats in the center console. My OCD wanted nothing to do with it, LOL.

After looking closely though, I realized it may not be as hard as it seemed...

Time to install: 5 minutes
Tools needed: hands
Total Cost: $25 (PRIME)

1 - Placed the charger in the vent that made the most sense to me.
2 - Tucked the wire under the trim by hand, towards the glove box.
3 - Opened the glove box.
4 - Ran the wire by hand down the left side of the glove box until I got to the bottom.
5 - Closed the glove box.
6 - Tucked the rest of the wire between the upholstery and the bottom of the glove box.
7 - Plugged that bad boy into the extra 12V plug that is under the glove box.

So now, holder and wireless charging enabled. No more wires.

Hope some of you find this helpful.

You're right — it's not a USB port it's just a 12V socket that you plug a USB plug into

Nice post. I bought a similar product (same look, but different maker). My problem was that the phone kept falling off. I have a thin leather case on my iPhone X. Do you use a case with yours, or do you have the metal ring stuck on to the back of your phone with no case? Just curious to see if there is a difference between products.

Thanks. I have the OEM Apple leather case. The magnet is really strong even with the case on. The phone has not fallen off once.

Thanks Pete. I got mine right after the iPhone X came out. I must have gotten the first run from China. I’ll look in to getting the one you got. Thanks again for the good review.

I use that socket for my dashcam. super easy to route the cables and (mostly) hide them.
