'16 550i Oil Change Interval per iDrive Excessive?

I had my oil changed in July of this past year, already have 6500 miles on it since. Was checking iDrive today and told me that I had 8,000 more miles to go before needing oil changed. So you mean to tell me that the 550i N63T engine can go almost 15,000 miles before needing an oil change? I've heard a few BMW mechanics tell me to keep up with the oil change on these cars every 5k miles. No way. The other thing is that I prepaid for 3 years all oil changes, but I have to wait until iDrive tells me it's time to schedule an appointment. What if I don't want to wait that long?? I know I can't make every 5k miles with the mileage I've been racking up commuting...but I also feel like 15k mi oil change intervals on the N63T is a death sentence. Interested in others' feedback, TIA

For sake of your engine, and it's internals, don't do 15k intervals, do inbetween 3k-7.5k depending how you drive, it is alot of city, or alot of highway commuting.

Where did you get the 15K oil change interval info? The US market uses a 10k miles/12 month CBS (condition based service) interval (which ever comes first). They've been using this interval for CBS services since around 2013.

And if you purchased the 3 yr oil service plan, the wording should say that you can get a "free" oil change when you get the service warning. And that should occur according to how the car is programmed...which is 10K miles or 12 months...which ever comes first. If you want to change your oil at a more frequent interval...you can do so...but you'll have to pay for the oil & service (if you don't do it yourself). The "free" service only occurs when you get the service warning from iDrive.

FYI...if you prefer to do more frequent oil changes...like cut it in half and do 5K oil changes...I would recommend that you DO NOT reset the service display when you change your oil at the 5K intervals...just let it play out and only reset when the warning comes up...then you can get your free oil change and not have to hassle with explaining why you qualify for a free oil service when there's no warning.

I have a 2015 with N63Tu and I’m pretty sure that my CBS interval for oil change is 12k miles or 12 months.

For what it’s worth I’ve been changing my oil annually at 6k-8k intervals (I don’t drive that much) and sending my oil to Blackstone for analysis. Every time the report comes back saying that I could have gone a few thousand miles more.

i'm averaging 375 mi/ week, all highway miles...the BEST miles. I def do NOT want to wait until 15k.

Very insightful! I was going to schedule an appointment for an oil change around 10k. I'd go sooner but i'm averaging 375 mi./week, all highway. I'll have to mention this at my next dealership oil change. I'd love to do every 6k miles but these oil changes cost me around $200 and I'd say if it wasn't mainly highway miles, I would try to schedule sooner.

I did the blackstone oil analysis a few years back, too. Great (& inexpensive) peace of mind! I'm thinking for a 10k mile oil change, I'm going to have the dealership pull a sample and send it off to BS for analysis.

Sending off a sample for testing is the best way to determine if 10K oil changes is too long or not for your driving situation.

If you do send off an oil sample to Blackstone...post back to update this thread with your findings...it will be interesting and informative for the whole collective.

If you have any tools or software that can check your VIN coding...you can see what has been programmed for CBS maintenance interval:
  • 8KA – 30K/24M
  • 8KB – 24K/24M
  • 8KC – 15K/24M
  • 8KE – 12K/24M
  • 8KH – 20K/18M
  • 8KK – 15K/18M
  • 8KL – 10K/12M
  • 8KM – 12K/12M
  • 8KP – 8K/12M
