I have a 2011 5.25 Touring with an electric retractable BMW tow bar that was fitted from new. Until now the tow bar has worked perfectly and the last time I used it (a month ago) it retracted without any problem.

Yesterday when driving the car I suddenly got an error message "Trailer tow bar electrics failure. Trailer lights affected. Have the problem checked by nearest Service". The tow bar had remained fully retracted since it was last used so I am at a loss to understand what triggered this.

The switch to operate the tow bar in the boot of the car shows a steady red light and nothing happens if I try to operate it.

I plan to take the car in to have the error message checked in the hope this is just a spurious computer glitch. Does anyone have any experience of this happening?

Mine did something similar to this the other day after some coding. Also had the red light on the button in the boot.

I had to press and keep held the towbar button while it went through a full cycle of coming out then back in again.
