New owner of F10 - oil temperature gauge question
Hi guys! I just bought 2 weeks ago a 2016 BMW 5 Series F10 2.0 diesel xdrive 190HP (B47) with 51 000 km on the clock (~31 700 miles) and I have two questions:
1. My oil temperature gauge never hits the 100°C mark. Is this a normal behaviour? Even after 200 km (~124 miles) of driving it doesn't hit the half mark. If I put it in Sport Mode the oil gauge goes down at almost 75°C. I saw on some YouTube videos of other owners that the gauge stays right on the half mark. The maximum that I had is shown in the attached picture. I have to mention that there were only temperatures under 10°C/50°F. 2. Is there any recommandations related to differential/transfer case oil change for the xdrive system? Or if is there any resource available where I can see what maintenance does this car require? My 2016 520d 190hp B47 hits 100°C bang on, both in cold and warm weather.

Thank you! So I guess I have an issue with the oil temperature gauge. I will try to investigate this further. Maybe someone encountered this problem and I will receive more answers here.

Thank you! My only concern was if it can lead to premature wear if it can't reach the optimum temperature. It's a little bit weird indeed that at some cars the gauge stays on the halfway mark and at some not.

Chiming in a little:
F10's come with two different types of oil cooling. Coolant-to-oil, or oil-to-air. The former depends a lot on your coolant temperature. Log your coolant temperatures and make sure they're not shockingly low, usually due to a bad thermostat. The latter is divorced from coolant temperatures and is regulated by an oil thermostat. Coolant-to-oil (silver block looking thing): Oil-to-air (two lines coming out):

Another thing to point out is that gauge on the petrol va diesel engines is different. On diesels it is supposed to hit the middle based on the scale used. On petrols the scaling is different (ie numbers on the gauge) so it’s supposed to be little to the left of the middle.
Mine is a petrol 535i from Canada and middle is 120c not 100c like in the diesels. |

Hello!
I do have a issue regarding my f10 B47 2015,the temperature gauge seems to lean 1-2mm to the right,as far as I know it should stay dead center and not lean to the side,please note that a hard acceleration in Sport for example will make it drop significantly. My question is if this Is normal since I heard that it does this in order to get better emissions/consumption. Thank’s in advance! |

Certainly not normal, and also note that the gauge doesn't really display the proper oil temp. You may have a failed thermostat (fails open). Since it's a diesel, that may lead to a blocked DPF quite quickly. Take it for a check-up.

Breach I did take it to two separate mechanics,both tested it and all appeared to work fine,they even cleaned the radiators and changed the coolant,after that one of them told me that this is normal bc the car does this for better emissions plus consumption but I didn’t really buy it.
So you say change the thermostat and see where that goes right? I also have to mention that I have a ongoing recall for this car regarding the EGR valve (still waiting for the parts) |

2013 F10 xdrive with the heat exchanger at the oil filter housing. Middle of the oil temperature gauge is 250F.
Normal for my car is slightly below 250F, which matches the owner’s manual: “Normal operating temperature: the pointer is in the middle or in the left half of the temperature display.” |

My 520d 190 hp reaches 100⁰C only in city driving, going and stopping all the time, and on highway with high speeds (150-170 kmh). In normal driving it is like this at ~95⁰C.

Definitely the thermostat, I just swapped mine out. Nothing looking wrong with it when I took it out. But I put it in boiling water and it started to open, when the water cooled down enough to put my hand it (probably 50/60 degrees it was still open so clearly was opening too early.
My car had 160000k miles by the way. Job was easy, but beware the o ring for the bottom radiator hose is a pain in the arse when you put the hose back on, but the o ring sits below the plastic bit which also comes out. Whole job took me about 4 hours ( 2 hours of that was trying to figure out the o ring in the dark ). Would probably only take 2 hours without having to do that!
