Should I Buy an Aftermarket Thermostat or an OEM?

My 2015 528i has a check engine light that an independent mechanic said is indicative of a bad thermostat with his scanner. Should I buy an OEM thermostat or should I buy an aftermarket one? I think the mechanic mentioned that if I were to buy it from him he would buy an aftermarket thermostat which starts with the letter 'B'.

Would you say this item is better than the OEM part or is it only a matter of saving money that you recommend I buy this brand of thermostat? The reason being is it's not so much about money but quality that I am after.

They produce it for BMW. They sell it under their own brand without BMW logo so it’s cheaper.

Thank you all for the input. Now, when I turned the car on and drove it, the check engine light doesn't appear anymore. I had to cancel the order for the thermostat unit. Do you think I should go through the hassle and get it re-scanned to see if the error code for the thermostat would still be present. Hassle because mechanics are always pissed off.

Has this ever happened to you in regard to error codes or light symbols?

Why did you cancel the order for the Thermostat? I would have the part ready incase the code reappears. When was the last time the Wp was serviced?

I thought the problem was perhaps a sensor error. I will most likely have to attempt to buy it today. I don't know what is meant by "wp."

The water pump has never been serviced. My car only has 44,450 miles on it.

How often is it driven? I would get a second opinion or get Bimmerlink and read those codes out to us.

Approximately, 3,700 miles a year since I bought it five and a half years ago.

3,700 miles per year and you live in L.A.? Only go out a couple of times a month?

Once more, Highly recommend you buy a Bluetooth OBDII that supports Bimmerlink or equivalent, and when you take it out for a drive, monitor the WP RPM and coolant temps, and more! So if it does happen again, you can supply yourself with data in relation to such fault.
