Need Advice - Fix 535i or Sell As Is
Hi Everybody,
So, had some unfortunate events hit me lately. One of the events is that I got the "Drivetrain Malfunction" and "Transmission Malfunction" warning on my 2014 535i M-sport. Turns out, I need a new transmission with some other things as well. I'm debating whether to bite the bullet and fix it (with a possible sale after) or just sell it as is for a much lower price. I'd like to get your feedback as I'm on the fence and still thinking things through. Thank you. -Mike |

Sorry to hear about your vehicle. Consider that when you fix it you can also hold on to it for a while. You need to be realistic about all your assumptions.
"Fixed Value" Look up what a 535 with your specs and mileage if all is well and documentation looks like in the market around you. Adjust a bit down for private party sale. Based on listing values I've seen I'm going to guess 10-12k. "Repair cost" Get this quoted on engine repair and transmission repair. Engine AND transmission - maybe 7-8k optimistically? So you can maybe make-out with 4k net on a fix-sale, vs salvage. Be realistic about the salvage value - the buyer pool is very small and those who are able to create value from a salvage vehicle are not going to pay up for a broken car. I'd assume maybe 1.5k very optimistically. There are a bunch of these cars around and they depreciate hard. There's a 535i locally asking 5k with engine issues that's been on the market for a few months. Costs nothing to list it on FB and see what kind of bites you get to refine this #. Be realistic about your numbers and get as close to the "real number" as you can. Consider the time it'll take you to do everything, and how you'd deal with transportation when you don't have access to a car, and associated costs. |

Thanks for the input. Something I'll include with my decision.
I did pull the trigger to get the transmission fixed. Also needed to get my oil filter housing repaired as well. I'll most likely drive it during the winter. I'm on the fence about selling, but I'm leaning in that direction. -Mike |
