What will happen when 0-60mph for most cars goes sub 2's?
At what point will manufacturers run out of bragging rights on the 0-60 front? The new BMW 340i is hitting 60mph in 4 seconds, meaning the G80 will hit it in 3.2-3.5sec, then what? At what point will drivers be feeling sick? I suspect that 15 years from now, the 0-60 for most sporty cars will be around 2 seconds. When the madness stops, then what will manufacturers brag about? top speed? As if I can go 280mph in a freeway. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Tesla is already claiming 1.7 seconds to 60mph for their 2020-2021 coupe.

Weight savings + distribution. Ride feel, responsiveness, etc.
It's been said many times but I think the "weight wars" are next for bragging rights. I've driven the P100D a few times and yea that roller-coaster acceleration is fun but the party trick gets old once you're on the road and taking turns.

^This. There will be no pleasure in driving for us enthusiasts. Everything will be self driving and probably regulated as far as speed and who needs performance. I hope I can continue to drive myself and the self driving isn't mandatory until I'm dead.

I look forward to self driving in a lot of situations and in a lot of ways. Traffic should get expotentially better. And there should be far less speed traps for the enthusiasts, as the LEO's won't be able to make money off speeding tickets anymore.

I think the bragging war about 0-60, top speed etc has been diminishing for a number of years now (1 or 2 decades).
Track times gets more and more important. Mainly nordschleife, as that is probably the longest track, that mostly mimics a road driven for enjoyment (so you get a sense of what the car is capable of speedwise, handlingwise and (very important for EV's stamina wise. I mean in the early 00's almost no manufacturer gave track times, and now cars like the new z4 (which is more of a pleasure car than a performance car) gets a nordschleife time. On the one side a track time gives a distorted view, as it can make development of cars result in an overly harsh ride (the james may argument), but then again thinking that an aston martin volante is a fast car because it has a big engine is also a compromised thought (when put on a track). So the interpretation of the info given will always be an issue. A p100d might give an impression that its a really fast accelerating car, but on the autobahn its utterly useless because above 120 it absolutely has no umpf considering its rated a bazillion hp. A car like a base corvette or base 911 will obliterate a p100d at those speeds (where 150mph+ is perfectly normal to drive over long distances at the more quiet hours and days).

The only 2.x 0-60 cars that i’ve actually launched are the GTR and the F90 M5. It does get kind of old after awhile. I get sucked into the arguments about who has bragging rights too, but if i really try to think rationally - as someone who doesn’t street or drag race, these numbers have no real use to me.
I agree that Ring times are much better measures of who builds the most all-around performance car, but to paraphrase something James May once said, a car built for Ring times is going to be a shit car on the road. I feel like my measurements on what constitutes a great car are starting to gravitate towards the intangibles - its design, how it sounds, how analog it feels vs digital. But good luck trying to measure all of those for bragging rights purposes, lol |

My wife's job has involved in the planning of future road use in Ontario. Self driving cars is a big chunk of the future but the reality is likely 20 years out before they are really main stream.

I don't think it's as near as it seems, for liability reasons. We crash, it's our own fault. The car crashes itself, the manufacturer gets sued. This is already happening. It's going to be a long time before manufacturers deal with the liability of switching to mass produced, truly self-driving cars.

Tires- 0-60mph in the 2 second range will quickly eat away the lifespan of some very costly tires.
Such quickness is of little value on the public roads. I wouldn't want a car capable of such times. Because 99.9% of the time I would be carrying tires, engine, chassis that I simply don't need. Most of the time just a decent amount of throttle on my m4 is more than enough. |

0-60 in 2 seconds is 1.3g so even with AWD and great tires you're getting into a territory of racing-only tires and / or prepped surfaces to exceed that even if the power is there.
Of course rockets jets propellers would help. |

At that point speed traps probably won't be necessary. The self driving cars will probably report your speed. Robot cops everywhere...

I've always wondered what is holding back automated speeding tickets being issued where toll booths are involved. If you're using an EZ Pass or similar device, one can easily determine your speed on that stretch of road by measuring the time it takes for you to travel between two sensor locations. Same applies if you travel a road requiring ticket on entry if you don't have a toll pass device. |
