This is one of the few times when I don’t have a MT vehicle…. But I’ve got the itch!

Love the involvement...please...make it gated with a lockout...then require double-clutching...

Audi R8 shifter pays homage to the history of gated shifters.

The Ferrari 250 GTO is still one of the best of the gated shifters.

I voted "prefer for a manual transmission" but with the caveat that it is along the lines of Porsche's manual or Caddy's, and not so much like BMW's. After owning 8 of them, all except 1 being M cars, they just dont make a manual that I feel is becoming of their cars.

Although I have a dct, manual is great! Definitely hope they continue to make these cars in manual.

I have a 6 speed manual, a 5 speed manual, a DCT and one with an auto. I even have a manual transmission on my office desk.

It’s an easy one for me. Analogue cars suit manual. There’s not much to compare to the experience of a naturally aspirated high revving V8 attached to a manual gearbox. It’s just driving therapy on the right road. Not much fun in traffic though.

Also older cars must be manual, mainly as auto boxes were absolutely horrendous back then and really affected car control.

Newer ones suit DCT or auto. Just sort of goes better with the experience and even good autos lock the box, keep your chosen gear and give you great control with the paddles.

One more thing. Here’s the manual experience that wins over everything else. These type of roads in your manual, analogue car with one of these in your rear view mirror. Forgive the crap quality as they were from a video taken during a drive day yesterday. Bliss.

Which in the grand scheme of things is a small minority of people. Obviously, physical conditions limiting the ability to drive a manual is a valid reason to not get one, but a Miata isn't the easiest car to get in/out of and I have a hard time believing that a small low sports car would be an ideal choice for someone if physical limitations were already hampering their ability to operate a manual.

BMW M3 And M4 Manual Gearbox Had 20% Take Rate In The US In 2023
February 4, 2024
Since we already knew that more than half of M2 G87 buyers opted for three pedals last year, we wanted to know the take rate among M3 and M4 buyers. BMW USA told us that one in five customers got the M3 Sedan or the M4 Coupe with a clutch pedal in 2023.
The German luxury brand has expressed its commitment to the manual gearbox after revealing there’s still enough demand globally to keep the 6MT. In an interview with Top Gear magazine last month, a BMW spokesperson said the do-it-yourself transmission will remain available in the foreseeable future. That said, it seems highly unlikely the clutch pedal will survive after the current-generation M2, M3, M4, and Z4 are discontinued.

Agree with that last sentence. I don't see them offering a MT with a hybrid power train. Nor would they offer one if they go full EV. I doubt they would do the latter very soon though.

It's a road map to a boring dystopian automotive future. A car with out a shifter or a ICE engine is nothing more that a toaster on wheels.

Out of the 12 cars my wife and I have purchased and sold in the past decade, two were automatic.

3 out of 4 cars in the garage are 6MT. Save the manuals!

5 out of 6 in our current stable are MT here!

I have only had 1 automatic bimmer, my first E30.

And in an age where the teen's do not even care to drive, my son is learning manual and loves it!

Well I guess if your going to stop making ICE cars you sure don't need any manual transmissions.

BMW Says You Should Buy A Manual M Car While You Still Can
February 13, 2024
Few luxury automakers bother to cater to enthusiasts in 2024 by giving them the option to opt for three pedals instead of two. BMW is one of the exceptions by selling the M2, M3, and M4 with a stick shift, which is also coming to the Z4 M40i roadster this year. Although a company spokesperson recently said there’s enough demand to keep the three-pedal setup alive, its days are ultimately numbered.
In an interview with Italian magazine Quattroruote, BMW Member of the Board of Management Frank Weber suggested the future is looking grim for the do-it-yourself gearbox. The inevitable demise of the manual is mainly attributed to a decrease in the popularity of the once-prevalent 6MT:
There’s more to the story than just the fact more and more people prefer the automatic to the detriment of a manual. Because advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are getting more sophisticated, these newer systems are primarily engineered to work with cars that have automatic transmissions.
