Dealer Scam or Legit?

So I'm trying to help my mother buy a car. She wants a 2020 Corolla. New they seem to be around $19-20k OTD for what she wants. Used I haven't found for less than like $17-$18k OTD so doesnt make much sense to me to buy it used since she will probably drive it until its worthless anyways.

Found this dealer who lists a 2020 with 10 miles as a CPO car. They claim they have a rental company or something (this is what they told her) and the car was registered so it cannot be sold new, but basically never used by rental company and only 10 miles. They want $19k OTD.

Soo... if what they say is indeed true seems like a better deal to me since she basically gets a new car and gets the CPO warranty on top of that basically for free. Where she would pay same for new car but not get the CPO. I went on the dealers site and found they had about 6 2020 Corollas listed as CPO with under 20 miles on them.

So do you guys know if this story makes sense, is this some new shady shit dealers are pulling or is this legit and a good deal?

Look for signs of shipping damage and repairs (they should disclose that, but you never know). Seems weird to have so many in this status without it being something like damage/repair. But you never know... Full warranty would help ease concerns.

Is the seller a Toyota dealer? If not, walk. A 10 mile vehicle that is not sold as new is a red flag.

Just curious, is the CPO warranty start at purchase? So the factory warranty is toast because the car was registered to this rental company?

Does the CPO cover ToyotaCare, their 2 years service coverage for new cars?

Good question, not sure will have to ask. Not a deal if you lose the bumper to bumper.

On a slightly different note, there is normally quite a bit more margin in a used car versus new. Whatever the story on those six Corollas that are now used instead of new, you should be able to negotiate a better deal than just $1k under the OTD for new.

Am I reading this wrong but a brand new one is 19-20k OTD while the dealer with a sketchy one wants 19k OTD.

Why would you even consider this and not get a new one instead?

I got my mom a lightly used Honda Fit with about 100 miles on the odometer. It was clean and the story behind it was that the car was a dealership test drive car. It was registered to the dealership for use as a demo car so it could not be sold as new even though it was a 2016 being sold at the end of 2015.

Well I only managed to get one dealer down to like $19,200 on a new one, rest want closer to $20k. However, lets assume for a moment what the dealer is saying is true. The car has 6 miles, for all intents and purposes it's a brand new car (I understand not when you go to resale it, but again she will drive it forever so not worried about resale) so assuming the car is legit and everything they say is true she would get basically a brand new car, but in addition get the CPO warranty on top of that. That would be the only way it would make sense in my book.

If as mentioned above it lost its bumper to bumper and now is sold only with CPO then fuck no it's a horrible deal I'll take the new one, but she claims dealer says it has both bumper to bumper and CPO.

I bought my C-HR in January of this year so I'm pretty familiar with the whole Toyota buying experience. In regards to the Toyota care, it's not as big a deal as you might think. The dealer will most probably follow the normal maintenance schedule which means your car will only get an inspection, top off of fluids, and tire rotation at 5k and 15k miles. You'll get an oil change at 10k and 20k along with the stuff done at the 5k and 15k service.

Anyways, maybe have the dealer run a Carfax which should tell you if the car is indeed registered to their rental car company. Also, if the car does have the bumper to bumper factory warranty, the dealer should have no problems putting that in writing on your bill of sale. Also, you can contact another Toyota dealer to see if the story you're being told is true. Or you can get the VIN for the car and go to another Toyota dealer to have them run it in their system to see what the warranty status is.

When I bought my 135i, I was told by my dealer it was just punched as a dealer demo. It wasn't put into service as a demo yet when I was looking to buy it. I tend to believe the story as the car only had about 10 to 20 miles on it when I test drove it. The status of the car meant the car got an automatic extension of the factory bumper to bumper warranty by 6 months and some additional miles which I can't remember right now. It was also still eligible to be sold as new.

The dealer may have a side scam going w/the rental company which I am guessing has a desk in the service department?

If the factory warranty is void and replaced w/the CPO warranty, again guessing but 1) do you loose the service warranty, if any, e.g. free oil changes and 2) does the CPO warranty have a deductible? If yes, then there is part of your answer but there must be something else b/c it doesn't seem like enough service profit to make it worthwhile, but what do I know.

Or the dealer needed to meet a sales quota and therefore the car was "sold" and registered but never left the lot.

This was my thought too. Very common of dealers to do this. They often get large incentives or kick backs from the manufacturer for selling x amount of vehicles in a given time frame. This could also explain the warranty ordeal if the factory warranty isn't transferable to 2nd owners. I would rather spend a little more and get a brand new one that is guaranteed to not be shady, but still.

Check with your dealer or call Toyota Co themselves, but I don't see why people think the factory warranty is void just because it is CPO. From what I know they take effect after the original factory warranty has expired.

To me though, if the original factory waranty is included then take the savings. If not, pay a touch extra.

TBH for a car that will be driven into the ground i'd just buy used, a couple of grand is a couple of grand.

It's a Toyota. Buy brand new, change the oil when needed, and drive it until the wheels fall off (good luck ). You probably won't need the warranty - my last 3 trucks each driven over 200k miles did not, aside from the oddball recall, which you're covered under anyway. But at least you know you're the only owner.

I know its the UK but....I used to sell new cars and it wouldn't be totally strange to sell a dozen new cars at once to a rental outfit and delivery them on a transporter. If the deal went south after the cars were registered but before delivery then its entirely possible the cars were in some sort of limbo until it was all sorted out.
I would have thought the cars should have the balance of the manufacturers 3 year warranty though?
In any case it seems like a proper conversation with the dealer about the car would make sense.

Car was probably used as a loaner by the dealership.

Doubt it was a loaner with 6 miles. The selling them for incentives might make sense. The dealer claims it has both bumper to bumper and CPO. Will make sure with Toyota, however an actual Toyota dealer lying about something like that would be a level of shadiness I have not experienced yet.
