Thinking about leasing a jeep as a daily driver..
I really like the grand cherokees, I think they look very nice. I'm using my e93 as a daily driver currently, and my miles are just shooting straight up. Plus driving this beast in the snow is just stupid, so I figured I'd spend $400 a month on a jeep lease and not have to worry about a thing..

I drive year round in NH, but we get only about 10 feet of snow during the winter in my area. Use 17 or 18 inch wheels with narrower and larger aspect ratio tires (same circumference as what you have now.
You could not pay me $5000 per year to drive a Jeep. If I wanted to drive one if those, I would bought one instead. I guess an SRT8 might be entertaining occasionally. Drive the car. Don't worry about the miles unless you are preserving it for the next owner to enjoy. |

I think the current Jeep Cherokees are hideous! With a capital H!! They look more and more like a minivan.
If you're looking for a daily, why not look at the mid 90's or early 2000 wrangler? Pay cash/enjoy. Doug |

I would suggest the Dodge Durango for a DD. Mine is the R/T, AWD, Hemi version. My BMW is the fun car, and my Durango is the family truxter baseball mobile daily driver. As you can see, I've had some fun with it:
It has good power, decent gas mileage (for a V8) and is actually fun to drive. BTW - it sits on the exact same chasis as the Jeep GC, just looks better...

It took me a little while to get used to the facelift, but inside and out I think they look great now. Looking at leasing though - adding in the options can get that lease payment to climb pretty high - have you already spec'd out one for $400/month or you just ball-parking? I was looking at wranglers decently optioned out (unlimited sahara) and it wasn't nearly as cheap as I thought it'd be.

I personally like the Current GC. I am not sure how much research the Op has done but a fully loaded GC with 3.0 TD is still like 5K shy of a well optioned BMW X5 or merc |

I just DD my cars in the snow. Extra maintenance happens, but if the weather is REALLY bad, I take my business truck to work.

I have a '12 GC. Year before they put in the seriously good zf 8 speed. That new trans fixed the only fault I've found with it. Great dd and SUV. Capable thru anything, comfortable, spacious, good mileage with the new trans. I'll lease another next year. Go for it.

I go skiing upstate, and I don't want to drive my m3 in the snow because A) In NY i've seen the stupidest drivers in the snow, one guy literally drifted into my old car, and B) I really don't want to use my car and wheels I just refinished in the salt.

FWIW - A friend of mine has a '13 Jeep GC with the 8 speed trans and V6 (or whatever year was the first year they came out with the new GC). He was just telling me that he is frustrated with the car, it's been in once a month for recalls, and keeps having random issues. They had to replace the entire hifi / nav system and had the car for a month... He also complained that the transmission was always in the wrong gear - tends to shift to highest gear possible for gas mileage. The trans gear issue could probably be corrected by running car in sport mode (if it has it). He said that he would never buy one again. It could just be the first year of a new model issues.

Believe that's pretty untypical. I've had a Jeep of some variety for the last 15 years, and taken them through hell and back. No issues of note. Toss up between a Jeep and a LR Defender for my doomsday vehicle.
The zf 8 sp is another world from the 5 sp in my '12. It's not the trans itself in the 5 sp -- smooth enough, etc. but the gearing and calibration. It's a mess. Short shifts out of 1st into 2nd where there's zero power. Anyways, the 8 sp is much improved. I even had a bit of fun with the paddles... Go test one. They have lease options for 2 yrs I think if you want limited commitment. Perfect for upstate skiing. During a northern MI winter, about every other car on the road is a Jeep. There's a reason for that.

Hey I just bought an 04 jeep grand cherokee! We could be like long lost cousins with like the same taste bro!
Haha anyway yea it's a Jeep, no worries! Go for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, not the one without Grand in the name and the tiny bug headlights lol.

With you. I recently got a nice incentive for a diesel and I'm considering it. You have the 8 cylinder? With the 6 cylinder the 5 sp is so damn wimpy.

Another option
Granted we don't have crazy winters in the south, but I have an e93 and a Land Rover. The Rover is the daily. You can grab a used LR4 for <40k or LR3 for less, and have a far superior winter offroader than a Jeep. Costs more, yes but in every way better than the Jeep GC (which admittedly is an awesome truck in its latest bodystyle. They are dead on reliable also -- i'm on my 4th one.
