Experience with Rout 66 Warranty

I reluctantly purchased this warranty several years ago as I approached 50,000 (Route, not Rout!). I had to open a credit union account for $5.00, and paid @ $2,500.

Peace of mind with the N63 engine, right?

This spring, my drivers side airbag light went on. It was ultimately a clock spring and cost $2,300 to replace/repair. Route 66 declined coverage as they don't cover restraint systems. When I explained what the part was and sent them the diagram my SA provided, they fully paid.

More recently, dealer noticed a variety of hoses (oil and turbo) were leaking pretty badly. I also had a front door lock actuator that was starting to go and throw the fuse. Total for all of this was $7,000!!

At this point, my car is maybe only worth $25,000. I might have dumped the car (which I don't want to do - I still really enjoy the ride). But Route 66 didn't bat an eye and all I paid was some tax, less than $200.

I'm pretty impressed by the company and awfully pleased with my "investment."

Your mileage may vary.

Bill

It is good to hear positive sides of things.
Also there are different levels of coverage so maybe you list which you have.

I purchased the extended warranty, 60 months, 100,000 miles.

The version is apparently called the "Easy Street."

Cute, huh?

I bought it in September 2016, and actually paid $2,748 (just looked it up).

I just bought the same policy for my 2016 550i for $2300 (under 40k and still under factory warranty). Hope I dont have to use it, but good to know they are covering the issues you are seeing.

Thought I would update my Route 66 Experience.

My 550 now has about 75,000 miles.

I smelled burning coolant, and had to top off the reservoir. Dealer diagnosed leaking coolant hose. A $60 part, but a $1,100 repair. My warranty policy expressly excludes hoses, so Route 66 declined my invitation. Fair enough.

Literally the day after I picked up my car, the "drivetrain malfunction" warning came on. Drive Moderately! screamed my vehicle.

Ultimately learned that one ignition coil had failed (they are a known weak link here). Route 66 agreed to pay parts/labor to replace all 8 coils. I decided to replace all spark plugs while the engine was opened up. $800 paid by Route 66. $350 paid by me. (Route 66 does not pay tax for some reason, so that is my responsibility?).

I am hopeful not to need to interact with my dealer or Route 66 any time soon. Warranty expires 9/2021, as will my ownership of this car.

I have had similar experience with Route 66. They do not pay for hoses, rubber parts.

Seems like a matter of time before Route 66 stops covering 5 series. They already do not cover certain high end cars. But shouldn't they cover tax???

BBill - have you had the CCP done on your 550? Have you had any oil consumption issues? Just curious.

Hey Fro,

I did have it done a number of years ago.

I have had to add a pint here and there over the years, but nothing extraordinary.

I fully recognize that I have been a little lucky.

Further Route 66 Warranty Update:

Drivetrain malfunction light went off again three times: 5th cylinder fuel injector.

Also, according to the dealer, the rear differential mounting bushings were shot (there are three of them).

Route 66 did not hesitate to cover the injector, but balked at the bushings, claiming they were part of the frame. I called and went over the part numbers with the friendly representative, and explained they were not part of the frame. He agreed.

I'm hoping to get the car back today or tomorrow, with another $3,000 or so in repairs paid for by Route 66.

At this juncture, it has paid roughly $13,000 in exchange for my $2,700 premium. On a car sadly now worth likely less than $20,000.

The warranty expires at 100,000 miles or September 2021. I think I will sell the car next summer.

Let me know if you are interested in a manual transmission 550 that has been very well maintained!

Also chiming in on great service with Route 66. After I had a huge repair, done at a BMW dealer, my SA said they were the best 3rd party warranty company he's dealt with (probably because they paid their $225/hr labor rate).

Funny, during my repair process, I was on the phone with Route 66, and after our conversation, when the customer service person thought we were already disconnected, I heard her say to someone else "oh my god another BMW, that's a $13,000 repair!".

Boulder Bill, FYI, since you've also had big payouts... eventually the total payouts will be capped at the blue book value of your car. If you have another $5,000 repair and your car's value is, say $15k, they'll cap their total payout at that value. Ask me how I know ;-) But still, obviously WAY ahead of the game by having Route 66.

Perfect timing for this post. In a month or so I'll be looking for an extended warranty.
Anyone has any experience with Endurance?
They always come on top of recommended carriers.

Hey mness, I don't know and hope to never find out, but I suspect the cap on repair is a per repair limit based on the then value of your vehicle. Which kind of makes sense to me. So, for instance, the warranty company might pay $30,000 over the life of the warranty for multiple repairs on what ends up being a $15,000 car.

But, again, I'm not sure.

I do know that I have been pleased with the response and coverage with this warranty company. I may actually buy another extended warranty going forward - this is the first time I ever thought it necessary.
