2012 528i engine failure
Being passionate to own a BMW we bought our ultimate driving machine , a BMW 528i in 2012 with 4 year/50k mile warranty from BMW of dallas. We have done all the oil changes and required maintenace since last 6 years. Last friday my car showed drive terrain malfunction and drive slowly. I went half mile down the road looking for place to park my car and see what's going on. Before I could find a place it showed up a message saying not safe to drive car might roll , going to autopark and refused to move an inch. This happened on a busy 40 mph road while I was driving the car with two of my kids. Luckily no incident happened.
We got the car towed after an hour to bimmer specialist. Upon inspection he stated that the timing belt snapped causing the cylinder head/camshaft damage. The expense of repairing it would be around 7k. I wonder why after taking good care of car and using only premium gas what caused the car to break down suddenly without any prior indications.spending 55k to own a car and see it break down in 6 years before it crossed 100k miles. Can't BMW engines last atleast for 100k miles. It was very unpleasing experience for us. We were planning to trade in this 5 series for suv in the last quarter of this year. Can something be done to help us. |

This is a much discussed topic now and others will chime in, related to the plastic timing chain guides that cause the timing chain to stretch and break. Sounds like this happened to you. I believe that BMW has extended the warranty for this issue to 7 years 70k miles. Call a BMW dealer to confirm this and hopefully you are covered, but sounds like you are at 100k?
I too have been concerned about this and had it looked at by a tech who says all sounds god, but could happen without warning I suppose. Did you notice unusual noises prior to this? |

So you had been seeing the error and still didn't get it checked out?

The issue I referred to is rare, and there are warning signs with sound etc. Sounds like you ignored the warnings coming your way. Please let us know what you find was the exact failure, etc. Thanks

I too have a 2012 528i bought from BMW of Dallas. I took my car in for a whining noise and 1 month later I get a full new engine replacement under the CPO warranty. I went with BMW of Grapevine. Please see:

The N20 has timing chain failures and other problems. This is why BMW replaced it with the B48 back in 2015.
