Wow...serious/new car damage
We'll, we picked up our 2014 528i on 12/7/13 and today a guy pulled out in front of my wife attempting an illegal U-Turn.
Every air bag in the car went off The front end is smashed - my wife hit the guy's passenger door and a light pole All tires remained inflated I think it actually may have still ran Most importantly, my wife walked away with a small burn on her arm from the airbag - the other guy was driving a 2008 Kia and he went to the hospital. The first responders told her it was a serious wreck. Oh, she spilled her tea all over the interior and her iPhone was demolished (screen separated and frame bent). I believe in the safety of these cars. |

It seems like this is asked a lot, but would they total a brand new car because all the air bags went off and the car has some front end damage.

It's never possible tell without a proper inspection but I would hope, and be quite surprised, if that is totalled looking at that picture. Sorry if that's not what your hoping to hear.
Very pleased to hear your wife is ok. I too take a great deal of comfort from knowing my wife and kids travel in well engineered safe car. Keep us updated with how you get on, good luck!

I don't think it will be totaled either. Not good to know the car may not be the same for the next 36 months.

I also doubt that it will be totaled. I have a friend who has a new X3 that had a worse wreck (about 35k worth of damage) that the other guy's insurance carrier fixed rather than declaring it a total loss. My friend found an attorney and got a settlement from the insurance company for "reduced value" of the car. I would check it out if they decide to fix it, and I would have it fixed by a BMW authorized repair shop. GL Keep us posted |

Yeah, I know they will fix it. The car is at the body shop of the auto group where we bought the car from - it was about five minutes from the accident.
I am rethinking my plan to wait a while to get my next BMW. If she would have been in our civic it would have been way worse. I am concerned about that. |

How does diminished value work on a lease?

Yep -- unless the frame is bent, they'll replace pretty much everything, and it's still cheaper somehow.

That was fast. So this is the beauty of a lease - you don't have a diminished value issue. Just turn the car in at the end of the lease.Glad your wife is OK.

The damage is up to $35,000 now and the USAA adjuster told me that the percentage of damage to total the car is 65% of the car value. I'm don't really know how to calculate the value of a 2014 with approximately 400 miles on it.
This may be one of those cases of how much a car depreciates when it is driven off the lot. Anyone know how to calculate value for a car so new or how an insurance company would do it? |

Approximately $61k. I didn't put anything down - chose to do multiple security deposits instead.

If $35,000 is 65% of its value, that means the adjuster thinks the car is worth around $54,000 which means you are underwater by around $7,000 if the car turns out to be a write off. in Canada, we get gap insurance included by BMW in our leases. Hopefully, your car isn't a write off.
