CDs not being written to the HDD properly

Has anyone else had or got a problem with loading CDs onto the HDD? I've had quite a discs now that initially start to load OK, and replay well, but by the end of the recording, it's a garbled, skipping mess.

No never used the hdd as I stream via BT.

Have you tried transferring to a usb with a decent write speed and then uploading to the hdd?

Thanks Beast,

Yes, I have, and it works, although that's a longer process than just sticking CDs in from my collection.

Anyway, I think the CD option should work?

It used to, just that it's getting problematic. Been back to the dealers a few times with it but no joy yet.

Just want to know if anyone else had the same problem.

Ahh just assumed that you would have all your music uploaded to a pc/laptop... I haven't used a CD for a while now, if I do buy one I tend to upload it and then store it.

Slight off-topic. How big is the internal HDD and is it a spinner or Solid state disk?

I think the pre lcis are disk and the lcis are ssd.
I don't ue it either and I prefer to put my music on a usb stick.
Unless it different on the LCIs the bitrate is I think quite low at 128mbps mp3. So not great.
Happy to be corrected on those.

I've got the NBT navi pro, I I believe that's 20GB.

I like to transfer my music onto the HDD because that gives you the option to make a favourite tracklist.

Back to the OP, I have not had an issue with copying to the HDD. Do you let it save completely in one go when you do the transfer? That's what I have always done - when you press "save in car" let the process finish without interruption.

Hey, thanks for all the answers.

Yes, I do just let the CD 'save in car' without interruption, but as stated in the beginning, its becoming more troublesome.

Yes, I have a HDD, and I wonder if I can get a SSD installed by BMW?

It would probably be cheaper to buy an ipod touch and pay a spotty teenager to rip all your CDs to a computer with itunes and then to the ipod than to pay BMW to install an SSD ! Probably still cheaper if you throw in a new computer as well....

I have all the music I want on an ipod touch (high bit rate mp3, certainly higher than 128kb/s) in the central arm rest cubby. Works brilliantly with the idrive. Not sure if a simple USB stick would offer album art and playlists in the same way ? Haven't checked yet.

or buy a 16Gb or 32GB flash drive. Put your wav/wma/mp3 files on there as you like.

Thanks all.

I do have an iPod touch, and a stack of thumbdrives, but currently I have a car that is supposed to be able to rip CD's to a HDD, and it's failing. I just wanted to see if anyone else had the same issue.

But thanks again for the constructive workarounds.

Would be interesting to see if the dealer can get to the bottom of it.

You can get really tiny 64G USB zip drives nowadays, not much bigger than a one pence piece.

Hi All,

Just an update on this issue. I went to the dealer 2 weeks ago and while they acknowledge the issue, they wont fund a new HDD. I sort of am OK about it, as it's a year out of warranty. Anyway, tomorrow I'm going in to have the HDD wiped and see what that does. I saved my music to a USB stick and will try to reload up the (other music from the) troublesome CDs when I get it back.

OK, had the HDD wiped, but still no joy. Same problem. Really strange. Dealer is looking to see if BMW will cover a new head unit. I may be lucky?

Total failure of a BMW Product

I've got the same problem with my June 2010 F10 "entertainment" system. It is just a total failure of a BMW product and BMW just don't care. BMW refers you to their $tealers, they haven't got a clue, all they can do is take more of your time and money (if you let them) with the comment that there is no guarantee that it will fix your problems.

I just have to live with this stupid failure of a BMW software product.

Try and try again and delete re-rip and eventually the Bavarian Piece-of-Crap Software (that's a technical-term) money maker for them finally gets it right. Until the next big track CD is ripped ....

The wife's 2013 X3 works fine - Why is there no BMW Customer Service follow through to remedy my documented, to them, complaints/issues. They are just too wealthy a company to give a

(Notice I have not used one swear word at all)
