Hey guys!

Was at the RALLYE BMW Car Show yesterday, great event.

On the ride home, my wife and son told me that after seeing the cars at the show, they think matte black would look really menacing on the GT, especially with its new wheels coming on Thursday and new M-fenders arriving in a little while.

What do you guys think? Would it suit my GT? I have to switch all the matte black accents to gloss black if I do it.

Now, please don't start any wars here, but kamigawa was showing me his X3 which is Plastidipped, and the quality and look is incredible, especially for the price. I've also seen vinyl wraps, which look just as good, but are a lot more $$$. They are both coatings that go over the paint and help keep it preserved. Now the real question is, is vinyl really worth the extra $1-2K? What are the benefits over Plastdipping. Some of my parts are already plastidipped and it hold up fine.

I included some pics of my GT as well as a matte black (non-modded) GT I found the internet. Lemme know what you think.

Check out Dip Your Car website. It's the way to go. The benefit of vinyl is they'll peel off much easier after years being on the car and it's thicker compared to Plastidip (better at hiding inperfections such as rock chips).

Plastidip will come off, it will just require more work. Matt Black would look really nice.

Thanks man... Appreciate it. Couple buddies plastidipped my chrome strip, door handles, and side markers. Loving it so far!!!

Really excited to be getting this done soon. There's a DYC installer up in NJ, which looks like they do great work. The GT's gonna go stealth mode

Very nice. I'm going to plastidip my grill and all chrome pieces on my F02 this week. I'll let you know my impression on this product as well. Good luck.

One thing by buddy tells not to plastidip are the wheels. He said when it rains, plastidip retain moisture on one part so it makes the wheels inbalanced. Not sure if anyone else had that experience.

Yea, I know that too. That's why my new wheels which are on the way are already coated in matte black. However, kamigawa has shown me his plastidipped car and told me all the benefits. I don't care if others think it's a cheap mod or what not, I think it will look great on the GT and will also retain the quality of the paint. And actually, plastdip is thicker, protects the car from scratches or rock chipping, and is easier to maintain than vinyl. Also, vinyl can shrink and sometimes leavee areas exposed, while plastidip starts out in liquid form, making it easy to cover all areas.

Also, I was thinking about leaving the roof and mirrors in Black Sapphire Metallic. Will it look good?

And what about the rear chrom strip? Gloss or matte black?

And lastly, I dont know what to do with the door handles. Should I keep them black sapphire or matte black with gloss black accents (the chrome parts on the handles)?

Ive seen many cars plastidipped. It looks like shit IMHO.

Believe it or not i was one of the first few people to start using this product in this fashion. For certain things its ok, but an entire car, i disagree.

Now youre talking about doing like half the car and not bits and pieces. Im sorry but i think its gonna be a mess.

This is just my opinion, to each his own, but just be sure if you do it, do it THICK so you can peel that shit off when you dont like it lol

I've seen a couple to, and this isn't DIY, it will be done by professionals. And, if I don't like it, I'll peel it

Why does everyone hate Plastidip? It's almost exactly like vinyl and is some ways, better. Easier to clean, more protective, and also vinyl can shrink and not always cover every area properly, while Plastidip can cover everything

This is what kamigawa posted on Bimmerfest. I don't know why anyone goes with vinyl wrapping after seeing the benefits of plastidip.

To each there own. I typically see civics and lower end cars go this route imo. Doing accent pieces in Plastidip is fine but doing the whole car will make it look and feel cheap. I am not a fan of matte black cars in general unless its a exotic like a lambo or ferrari. Plastidip isn't smooth and it will probably be even more a pain to keep clean since its not a smooth surface like paint or vinyl.

You have much more color options if you went vinyl.

Anytime I see a Matte car, unless it is 100% perfect and 100% clean, I instantly wonder " what color they are going to paint it when they save up enough money for a paint job " because it looks just like primer.

I would do carbon fibre wrap roof, that would look sick (or use Plastidip glossifier). LOL. You'll need contrast, so gloss black grill might help too. Anything that's currently chrome should be gloss black. You can get plasti dip glossifier to make anything gloss black.

Actually as kamigawa showed me plastdip is easier to clean and if done right can be smooth yet mildly textured. I'm gonna put a poll up and see what the results are.

Tbh though people may think its cheap and what not, but it's essentially just a rubber liquid version of vinyl, and vinyl is often harder to put on a car.

So I did some more research, and I found another alternative to both Plastdip and vinyl which seems to be the best of both worlds. It is called Car Dip UK (ill include a link below) and it is a liquid vinyl with a smooth non textured surface. After drying, it turns into vinyl, and you cannot tell the difference between the dip and vinyl. According to their website, it is a much more high quality product compared to plastidip, it is in fact not an all purpose rubber coating, but rather specifically designed for cars. In the Dipping Examples Section of their website, they show their customers dipped rides, and they are all very high end vehicles (Porsche, Lamborghini, etc. )

I am looking into to it and hopefully all works out.

Now the real question is, who likes or doesn't like matte black on the GT. Please post yes or no, all opinions welcome.

Matte black is soo 2003.

Matte black was cool when people had it on their Ferrari, lambos and RR in 2003/4/5 and took the car on Gumball, Bullrun and the likes.

It's like all design, it starts on the top of the chain, then trickles down to the very bottom, looking nothing but fake, pathetic and overused. This is were matte black is now.

I see Toyotas with matte black on a regular basis.
