*UPDATE 11/10/2020**Flood Victim 550i Project ::

**UPDATE** Got lots stripped, parts taken out! Finally getting somewhere!

Ok, so about a week ago i purchased a 2016 550i 77k miles. It had been in a pond for about 30-40 minutes *10-15 fully submerged*.

Now i know what most are thinking, you're nuts! But wait a second.. Cheapest 550i i can find of this year is around $21,000.. I got it for just over 3500$..

So i know i have a bit of a road ahead of me, but heres the update so far!

Previous owner never tried to start it after the pond, Once i got home, i removed the plugs and confirmed he never tried starting it.
Once i removed plugs i turned it over, and spat water out of the cylinders.

I then drained the oil (and 2 gallons of water) From the engine.

After draining and adding fresh oil (first of many) the car will no longer crank over by the push button, Guessing its some kind of starter issue.
(Motor still turns by crank quite easily with plugs removed)

Todays Work!
Removed all of the Computer modules from the trunk, opened up any that could be opened and cleaned all of the corrosion off (Yes i know this doesnt guarantee they will work!)
And put them all back in,
Then i started pulling out back steats, and stuff to get to the fuse panel in front.

Parts to install:
New Fuse Panels (Ordered and on the way)
and.. well w/e else goes bad

**LATEST UPDATE**

Just wanted to share this adventure, heres a Video of the run down.

Wow dude. You got some balls or are insane! I got balls but even I wouldn't have wanted to go down that road. Not with these kind of cars anyhow. I'm guessing fresh water since you say pond? Now I have a 535i n55 engine. The ecu which commands the start function is under my intake. Not sure where it would be on the n63. Might want to start there with getting it started. Best of luck. Subscribing. Want to see your progress

WOW!! IMHO, you'll be chasing electrical gremlins as long as you own the car.

What happened to the left rear wheel? Looks like a serious crash back there.

Well if you watch the video you'll know! lol, it was when the tow truck pulled it out. I am an aviation electrician by trade, so i dont mind electrical issues as a whole. And i plan to take the entire interior apart and clean / grease all of the connectors, so it shouldnt be much of an issue. Also, i am replacing both fuse panels already, which i think is a huge step most miss when working on flooded vehicles. Chasing corrosion in fuses would be a neverending nightmater

Yep fresh water, and honestly idk about "Balls" when someone gets a 21,000$ car for 3500$.. of which i could make 5-6k profit if i parted it out, its more of an easy choice haha. Also the ECU was turning over the car before i drained the oil /water mixture, i think it may be something to do with the starter at this point.

Goodluck. At 3500 it's not a huge risk just more of a headache of time involved chasing down issues

Well pricing everything out, i dont think it can honestly, a used running one cheapest i could find like i said was 21k, so im not sure how it can add up to anywhere near that even if the engine turned out to be bad. But i agree and i guess i get to see where it goes!

This is great! I love to see people who have the guts to take this on. It will be terrific to get it going again! What a great feeling that will be.

Good luck with it all! I'm going to watch the progress.

Thanks

What about wiring harnesses? Will they be "safe" other than the plugs? Will you replace the plugs or just refurbish them? Plans for the infotainment system?

No mold...

Well the exposed areas that were wet got dried quickly, and the low parts stayed wet, so some how no mold yet.

Wiring harness's should be fine overall, ive pulled a few pins here and there and no rust or corrios creeped the wires.
And i plan to just clean everything at this point, if i find anything BAD then i'll replace.

Also if you could anymore questions please post on youtube page I could use the comments towards views lol

Not sure if you'll need that d can cable. I don't use it with ista. Or esys. Only Ethernet works for me. It will do both diagnostics and coding.

Once the new starter comes in this week, I plan to do a quick compression test, and then fire it up! (After one more oil change )

Given how long the car was in the pond, I really doubt you'll run into serious electrical gremlins. Probably just get the typical "oops dropped my phone in the toilet" kinda problems.
