m performance exhaust 535i M (San Diego)
Anybody with an M performance exhaust system in the San Diego area willing to give me a 2 min joy ride to determine if I should get it? I'm concerned that the cabin noise will be too high during day-to-day driving and WIFE will not be happy. LMK

That's awesome! I was supper happy with my muffler delete, no drone and it sounds great. A lot of the guys running the M sport ex. Have asked what I got put on but it's just a muffler delete with factory tips welded in place

If you're ever in West LA, you could go for a ride. I love the exhaust PRIMARILY because it doesn't annoy the shit out of my wife. Drive normal, and it's only a hair louder than stock. Get on it, then she sings a lot more. There's ZERO drone.

Which M PE part number do you have installed? There were two revisions for the F10 535.

Have to admit, this does sound nice on the 535i. I was test driving a brand new/left over deeply discounted 535i at the dealer near me and it came with the M Perf Exhaust installed and the sound was definitely noticeable inside.

I've been on a (low priority) quest to determine that for years. The only thing I ever found was a German document saying that the change was all about the tips. The old model bundled chrome tips and the new didn't, allowing buyers to spend more on titanium, carbon fiber etc...
I have a theory that the existence of two models explain why some owners say "my wife can't even tell the difference with the windows up and absolutely zero drone" and others experience 1.75-2.25k drone on the highway. Generally, owners don't pay attention to which one they have - they're all just "M PE for 535i". I have been unable to collect enough data from owners to make a conclusion. If I ever find the newer version for sale locally to me second hand for a good price I will buy it, compare, and keep one. You'll see me chime in to some for sale threads asking "which one?". |

It is well known that there are two versions of the MPE.
However, I think there is another issue that is effecting drone too. Not all N55 engines are the same. Early 535i models feature a pneumatic wastegate (PWG) like the N54 models used. Then, starting with 07/2014 production, BMW switched the 535i to an Electronic wastegate (EWG) design. I’d be willing to bet that the change in design also came with modified watergate programming/behavior in the ECU. This could easily account for why some people have drone and others not. In addition, BMW adjusts various ECU parameters through software updates. These update could have made the drone more or less appearant over the years. |

The change in MPE was 2012, I believe, with the first version only being used in 2011 and part of 2012. The second version has been "current" since then for the rest of the life of the F10 535. My PWG 535xi has had the 2011 factory software, 2015 software and just got brand new software about a month ago. I noticed no change in exhaust sound with the first two software versions. I go back to factory mufflers for the winter and haven't put my MPE back on yet. I did notice a change in the stock exhaust sound of the most aggressive shift profile (only) since the brand new software and I'm interested to see how the sound has changed with the MPE. |

I was suggesting that the same MPE might sound slightly different based upon if it was fitted to an EWG model or a PWG model. Keep us posted on what you experience with your new software when you go back to the MPE. |

I installed M Performance Exhaust on a 2014 BMW 535I xDrive yesterday and it sounds like the 2007 BMW 335I I had before. I now have to wait to see what my wife has to say.
