2012 550i Blown Motor 71500 miles
I just had an oil change June 01 at 70,250 and returned for oil consumption test at 71,250, as oil and coolant top-offs have become too frequent. SA indicated only 0.8L consumed in 976 miles = OK. SA suggested 1st test was highway miles and advised to return vehicle for 2nd test at 72,000 driving more aggressively stop and go. He seemed to have some compassion and hoped that repairs could be done if 2nd test failed.
Well, I never made it. Took it out for a short hop last night and noticed a slight chirping noise, mostly when feathering the throttle. Thought there may have been some driveline vibration issue or maybe a coil going bad. Before I could complete my trip, the noise became louder and bucked and hesitated. No warning lights and oil is still showing max. I parked it on the street and had it towed to dealer today. Odo showing 71,500. Hoping it is turbos and not short block related. Really hoping the care package can some how accommodate this, but not holding my breath. Stay tuned. 7/2 Update: BMW confirmed motor is toast. They will not tear down to determine root cause, but confirmed that metal shavings were found in the oil and no point in going forward with diagnosis. Looking to BMW for financial assistance, but I do not have much faith. Any suggestions to recover $ from this vehicle? I don't really have the real estate or patience to part out. Replace motor by indy? The car is nice, but not perfect. |

What will be the BMW percentage for coverage on replacement engine?
This is just another example why the early 550i should be avoided, they can literally fail at any moment. |

Ask Bmw Dealership for goodwill , cause as you are aware that engine got a technical action and it was replaced after the procedures. They should be changing it free of charge.
Anyway if you are done with that car you can feel free to contact me anytime , because we are exporting cars to Europe and i will be glad if i can help you in that case. Best Regards |

I wish Sofparts. Because of the class action suit and my car did not meet oil consumption limit (1L/750miles), BMW will not offer any assistance. Had there been no lawsuit, BMW indicated we would be having a "different conversation". I was also told by my dealer they would only offer 4k of the total $22k to replace the motor - which is also about what BMW would have offered, had I qualified for the oil consumption lawsuit. Very sad.
BMW did not care that proper oil maintenance was documented. I also argued the car had a long history of issues. Leaking fuel injector and fouled plugs at 10k. Trans fault at 21k replaced pressure plate and clutch disc. Cracked head and cover at 24k. Subsequent repair crossed cooling lines which were not swapped back until 10k miles later after multiple complaints of coolant loss. Replaced trans at 28k because of popping out of gear. Oil and coolant consumption up to engine failure. If there is any interest in a decent shell - let me know. 550i manual, Imperial blue/grey leather, M-sport pkg, 20" 373 wheels (rears have slight bend). I don't have any decent pictures but the car is stock and in great shape. Exceptions - M5 mufflers. center vent, brake switch, and driver door handle trim is peeling. 1 ENGINE - $7857.00 2 INTAKE MANIFOLD - @$64.50 2 GASKET - @$28.00 2 EXHAUST GASKET - @$42.00 16 NUTS - @$3.02 2 CLAMP - @$39.10 2 CLAMPS - @$39.10 9 OIL - @$16.80 1 COOLANT - $22.77 9 TRANS FLUID - @$89.57 1 V/C GASKET - $53.50 1 V/C GASKET - $53.50 2 GASKET - @$16.75 TOTAL REPAIR: $9451.32 (parts) + $6,692.73 (labour) + $178.95 (1 hour of diag) = $16,144.05. In addition, 1 COIL - @$125.00 (1.5 hours labour install) 8 Spark Plugs - @ $399 package. So with taxes and the diagnosis charges and whatever I'm told I'll owe them around $2400 out of my pocket. Cause the warranty has approved the claim of $17,000 (the car value). |

Krishnal - That is my fatal mistake. I did not get a warranty.
I should have removed oil from the engine before the tow truck took it away. Then maybe I would have qualified for the oil consumption suit and received some compensation for a new motor. thanks for the parts list, but I am not dropping 17k for a new motor on a 17k car that will just take a dump again. |

You know I bought my 1st ever BMW last year and just drove about 8k miles and I'm getting new motor under warranty. I did enough research before getting BMW N63. So, I made myself clear that I want 550i xdrive but not without warranty. I was little bit shocked/upset when I was told $7k for aftermarket warranty but as per my research I convinced myself saying it's ok, I'm going to go for 550i and aftermarket warranty.... On the other side my doctor's receptionist she bought 2011 X5 35i with N55 for her daughter right around same time when I bought it last year. They never had owned BMW before and of course they didn't researched about BMW and the dealer didn't offered them aftermarket warranty. One day her daughter was driving on highway and made some noise and car literally died on her. She barely made it to shoulder.... Anyways, long story short the diagnosis report from indy shop said - - The noise was because of manufacturing error in the rear crankshaft oil seal. - Valvetronic adjustment fault too frequent. - Needs re-programming + possible valvetronic servomotor. So, now the car is sitting at european dealer for trade and they are getting 2020 chev malibu, as the cost is too much to fix the car. Should they have got aftermarket warranty and they would be laughing right now.... So, are you just going to let go the car? |

7k is hefty for a warranty, but would have been worth the peace of mind and probably covered previous repairs for aux battery and fuel pump - each 2k. Seems to be a steal now that the car is spent.
I've had similar experience with Mercedes R500 transmission and Audi A4 engine sludging and had to foot the ~4k bills. I did have a 3 month used car warranty that saved my 2007 X5 3.0 when a rocker let go and covered the new head soon after purchase. That was lucky timing. But this one takes the cake. I am considering a '20 330i lease just to get into something reliable and have full warranty. This is not where I want to be, but I just lost 10-15k in equity/trade. I don't want to deal with dragging a dead car around or have more expensive repair bills on another used car replacement. My 06 330i is keeping me busy in the garage. If someone wants to give me more than 2k for the 550, speak now. |

Just picked up Car yesterday, it runs like dream!!!! Just following Break-in procedure until 6,000 KM. I had to pay $2,026 out of my pocket as warranty only approved $17k. Quite happy as I got new Vent Pipe, Oil Feed line and Coolant Hose along with Brand New Spark Plug Now my next step is to replace Front & Rear Diff. Fluid and Transfer Case Fluid. Asked BMW parts counter about price of Diff. fluid and I was shocked the price is outrageous. The car takes 1L in each Diff. and BMW 75W-90 is $68/Litre. And Transfer Case Fluid (DTF1) is same price as well - crazy pricing.... Please see attached pics of Invoice.... |
