Custom carbon fiber interior and the steering wheel
Finally I got my custom carbon fiber interior and steering wheel installed. Since I've received steering wheel much before the rest of the interior and steering wheel paddle shifters, I still need to install the paddle shifters (which is why you see stock paddle shifters).
The shop which did it said they had to redo red carbon fiber part multiple times to get the right shade of red which I've requested, so it took a while. If you look better, you'll see red theme in the car interior. Here are the pics: |

I've provided detailed instructions to the carbon fiber shop about the way I want things made (including making silver parts of interior trim in red CF) and they did it, but it took them many tries to get the red color right. You can get carbon fiber in many other colors other than the black.

I have installed performance carbon fiber start/stop button and plates behind inside door handles. Since they are performance carbon fiber each component adds 10hp (50hp total) 😉

Sent you a PM. One thing to note that I've lost heating functionally on the steering wheel when converting it to CF. There was a seller from Germany that sellers CF steering wheels just like this one but his wheels are heathed too. He sells them completed with all parts and the airbag and it is about $2300 which was way over my budget.

This looks great. Looks like you also updated your gauges and nav to the digital from the G30 series?? How much of a PITA was that?

For the navigation, I have installed MMI unit (number of vendors sells them for between $220-$240, they are Andream, IndiWork.co.kr, Carlinkit and RoadTop. Bimmertech's MMI Prime has identical unit look and functionality like the ones mentioned above, but it is $650. I have Bimmertech's MMI Prime with the front view camera and other than the phone support that Bimmertech has, there is no difference between these products. This is a good thread on that topic https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1675929 Installing MMI unit took probably an hour (not difficult) and installing front view camera (mounting it, running wire from bottom of the front bumper, through the engine bay, through the firewall and routing it under driver's knee airbag and below steering wheel to car stereo area and connecting and testing it took another 1.5 hrs. If I would have to do it again, I could do it in half that time. So overall, it wasn't really difficult. |

And the steering wheel is in (still need to figure out how to configure the LED colors) You need to click on pic to see it fully.

People typically get CF parts as an expensive weight reduction mod (as opposed to stripping interiors) for the end goal of making the car faster and feel like more of a race car. Realistically there are more effective ways to drop the weight such as removing AC/sound dampening/carpets since the weight reduction improvements would be magnitudes more impactful.
Guess people are getting CF these days just for the look since it resembles other light-weight true race cars which would be more suited to be built of CF. This car was never built with lightness in mind and although it can be fast in certain scenarios there's no point feigning resemblance to a class it was never built to fit. No offense since everyone has a different taste. Hope you like it. |
