BMW hard shifting/won't drive in reverse when cold

My BMW 550I 2012 M sport X drive, hard shift 1-10 miles on down shift. I recode my car, didn't work. Hard reset. Didn't work. Called BMW no new transmission codes. I check the fluid in my transmission which is fine. No major leaks underneath the car. The only thing is to drop the car off at the BMW service and wait for a definitive outcome why the car was hard shifting and resist driving in reverse in the mornings on start up. Any assistance would be great.

I not sure the steps work, I have trouble with my BMW 550I M Sport, Drive and these steps did not work for me. I had the car diagnosed with a European proformance which did not find any faulty codes. Then I finally took it to BMW service which they told me I need a NEW TRANSMISSION. Cost 12K. Not on my life. The car is used, I am screwed cause not sure what I will do.

Problem solved!

Hi all,
I had this issue with my F10 and I had the car recovered to my local BMW dealer. When they plugged the diagnostics into the car, they found an EGR fault code logged.
They have since changed the EGR valve and the car drives like a new car! Hesitation is gone, jerky shifts are no longer preset and it pulls like a train again!
Hopefully this helps someone

Hi

I had a similar issue on my E66 7 series at around 60,000 miles. While slowing down and stopping the gearbox would clunk when it changed down from 2nd to 1st gear.

I tired the reset method described above, turn on ignition, hold down the accelerator etc.. Symptoms would always return after a few weeks or sometimes within a couple of days.

So I replaced the gearbox filter and transmission fluid and while I had it all apart I replaced the mechatronic sleeve and adapter seals too. I also reset the adaptive settings using INPA.
This fixed the problem permanently. This was done three years ago and the problem has never re-occurred.

I find it hard to understand why BMW state the transmission fluid should never be changed. Without changing the transmission fluid my car would have probably been scrapped

About a year later, in order to fix a completely different issue, I replaced the power distribution box.
Surprisingly this had an exteamly noticeable effected to the ride of the car making throttle response a lot sharper and gear changes smoother.

The reason why I am here, I was looking to see if anyone has had any experience with using INPA with the F10. Clearing gearbox adaptive settings for example??
I have just purchased a 2015 F10 5 series and thinking about future maintenance. INPA would be so handy if I can get it working with my F10.

Thanks for the great post, my 550I does jerk in low speeds under 10MPH. I am going to try this tip tonight after work and will update upon completion.

problem solved

I also had a car jerking issue at lower speeds under 15-20km/h on my 2011 528i (N52 engine) [car has 130K km].
not sure if it would help others but this worked for me.
I cleaned MAF sensor and replaced all ignition coils and all spark plugs and the issue seems to be gone

Which reset did you perform, the acceleration pedal method or reset using INPA as mentioned above?

I tried the acceleration pedal method but....noticed that the car (when cold) shifts hard and jumps into drive from reverse. When the car is warm, no issues with shifting from park/reverse/drive. I think I may try the EGR next and then do a flush and fill of the transmission fluid. Thoughts?

Any suggestions will help, warranty expired last month... any suggestions on who to get a extended warranty from?

Thanks!

I had the same hesitation and jerking issue, finally my transmission went into limp mode. Upon inspection from bmw, it was determined I needed a new tranny. Got it replaced few months ago and have no more symptoms. Hopefully that’s not the case for everyone, but it resolved my issue permanently

had the same problem from about 65k miles. 70k had plugs changed, car never threw any errors, has been basically flawless other than shifting issue at low speed, like car couldn't decide on a gear when going around corners or quick acceleration from red light. never a huge issue, just kinda got used to it. at 112k car started to shudder between 3-4-5th gears. 2 weeks later had drivetrain malfunction and car DTC showing misfire in 5th cylinder. had indy change all plugs and coils due to mileage. car now drives like brand new with no shifting problems at all. don't know if he did the MAP sensor (nothing about it on invoice). he uses oem parts, don't know the brands, but an amazing difference. good for another 60k!

I recommend Cleaning your MAF and MAP sensors (both on air intake and by throttle body) and then resetting the adaptation values using ISTAd. That seem to work so much better.

I tried it right away, and I have to admit, the accelerator is much smoother now from stop. And I'm a much happier F10 owner now than I was yesterday.

Steps...

1) hit start button once to turn on power (Don't start the engine)
2) then press the accelerator down to the floor for 5 sec
3) then hit start button once to turn off power
4) then remove foot from accelerator
5) then waite for 2 minutes
4) then start the engine like normal and try it out!

Good luck!

UPDATED ON (Aug. 3. 2011): This turned out to be a temporary solution that would last for about a week. A permanent solution is said to be in the latest software by BMW - refer to (SIB 12 09 11)
How much mileage? I get this issue once in a while on my 16' 528

I am going to try this. My issue seems to be in high gear, low rpm. It is not as prevalent in Sport mode. And it does not usually happen from a complete stop.

Been dealing with this issue since I bought my 2011 535 ix, in 2014 with 38000 miles. At 70000 I did trans fluid, to no avail. Jerkiness got better but still present. A few weeks ago, I got a new obd2 scanner, with a few options for just bmw cars. I reset Tranny adaptations and did a fluid change again, the time at 105k miles. At first I thought I broke the transmission, shifted so bad, jerking and violent shifts. After a few days of driving, I can say the car behaves like if it had a new transmission. Smooth shifts, shifts are held longer, which makes the car much more responsive. I've read hell stories about doing what I just did, so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, I guess I just got lucky.

Did you get this done under the HPFP extended warranty for the N63TU engine?

I'm at 74k miles, and on cold starts I get hesitation, jerkiness under 10 mph. Once it warms up no issues. Just trying to see if I go get diagnostics done again, and perhaps my HPFP needs to replaced. I had the original extended warranty replace my HPFP about 1 year ago, so looking to see if I've got a bad one and need to replace it again (and hopefully it is covered by the dealer).
