Cost to powder coat rims?

I was looking to get my stock M-Sport 19" rims powder coated black.

I asked a shop and they quoted me $850 to take the rims off my car, take the tires off, powder coat them, then re-install the tires, balance, etc.

Is that a high price?

They would also keep my car inside, not outside.

Here in Chicago I got quoted $500 out the door including mounting and balancing.

Seems like alot of money. At most I would pay 100 a wheel. Ask how much if you dropped off wheels, then as a couple tire shops for unmount and mount cost. 800 is ridiculous

^^^I agree, depending on where you are in CA, there are plenty of shops that do it for about $100 per wheel - New Year Wheel in Costa Mesa (near Crevier BMW) for one.

Does the $100 include taking off the tire, re-installing the tire... and storing the car in a shop for a few days?

Yea I wouldn't pay over 400 for all that. Like I said you might want to store the car yourself and just bring the wheels. But if you got 800 burning a hole in your pocket go for it.

$800 is not unreasonable considering they're doing everything from start to finish. I've had wheels painted and it was $500 ($100/wheel + $100 gloss) but that was me doing all the initial work and driving on some stock wheels. I brought them the wheels only. You figure $500 paint + $150 removal and mount/balance (non road force) + $150 storage of car on jacks for 3 days.

To me that is still a lot. For that much I'd rather buy a cheap set of stock wheels and tires (can be found for less than $400 w/tires - look on craigslist, offerup, letgo, etc) and just keep my car for those days they are painting my wheels. While their price may not be completely unreasonable, there are ways to make it much more palatable to you. There are many tire shops that will mount/balance tires for less than $100. Removing the tires, and THEN remounting/balancing I can see costing $150, but not for just the mounting/balancing. Then again, I never take the first quote I get, and always shop around.

Yeah this price is quite high I figure it shouldn't be more than $100 per wheel to paint and then additional$25 to mount and balance. So any bring over $500 I think is to high. Prices out there might be different from here in Chicago though

There are at least as many shops here in SoCal, where customizing cars is a way of life. So, shopping around is definitely a good idea. Some shops are prone to charging the "BMW tax" (charging more to customers who drive cars better than a Honda or Hyundai)

Haha I totally agree. I have maybe a dime size dent on my trunk lid near the emblem. I wanted to get a estimate for dent removal and when the guy was walking to my car with me he said "Oh a BMW? They make these really good it going to be little harder to get that out. " I just said ok and left lol

Just plastidip em. Won't cost you more than 80 bucks and when you're wanting to go back to factory you can peel them off

Not really. People think mine are powder coated gold. The finish is very smooth, it's a rust oleum version of plastidip
