Which one is that? I was doing some other work with all the bottom covers off of mine and there's some blue-ish corrosion in my transmission ground strap so I'm thinking of putting that on my list. Early on in the investigation phase though.

That looks like the interference strap grounding the valve cover/coils.

The original BMW part as shown on the left side of the OP's illustration, is part number 12427581396, and has been superseded by 12428643430 on the following vehicles:
....if you are going to replace with OE, buy the latest version. |

I don't know how "flexible" the aftermarket ground strap shown in your original figure, but I would NOT recommend using that between something that vibrates (engine or transmission) and one that does not (chassis). There is the potential of transmitting more than just electrons (or holes) through the "stiff" wire. I'd trust that BMW uses a very flexible ground strap for a reason on their vehicles at certain locations. And when signs of corrosion or "wear", replace with OE ($40). IMHO. |

I have it on my car and briefly helped them test it on my car. Its a thick gauge wire but its still flexible enough below the car. I recommend it if you want a piece of mind on something thats always exposed to the elements.
