Very rough idle P052B
I just picked up a f10 2011 535i at auction. Wouldn't start. So I replaced the starter. Now it starts up after a long crank. But runs really rough. I mean the engine has a violent shake. I'm hoping it's not toast. Codes are p052b cold start A camshaft position timing over retarded p15df cold start fuel pressure too low p300 Random misfire and p301 cylinder 1 misfire
I haven't had a chance to hook up ista to get the Bmw specific codes yet. I will as soon as I can. But any help to get started would be great. |

This is what I got for p052b:
Eliminate consequential faults, faults for the following components/functions: - Oil level too low. - Camshaft sensor. - VANOS solenoid valve, inlet Perform system test. Replace VANOS solenoid valve, inlet. For p15df : High pressure fuel pump error... Looks like hpfp is going out on you. |

Bad news. The oil pan is cracked right above the steering rack. Looks like it threw a rod on cylinder 1. So the engine is toast. I can see metal and plastic bits through the crack. It's like marbles in a can rattle. This sucks! Rolled the dice and lost. I'm optimistic though. If I can find a donor motor.

I am not 100% sure about that but if engine was leaking oil like crazy and someone was driving it then who knows what kind of damage is done to the motor. Specially with those plastic and metal pieces that you are seeing. You can try replacing oil pan and filling oil and see how that does. Only if you doing the labor and it doesn't cost more then the cost of the car.

I haven't had a chance to get the oil pan off yet. It's been pretty cold but for 1 day where it was 70. And schedule not allowing. I pulled the oil filter to see if there were any metal shavings. Glitter in the oil and I don't see any. Which seems somewhat promising. But won't know for sure until I get that pan off. I have the front end on jack stands, wheels off and motor ready to be hung. Btw. Did you guys know that the tow hook is used to also hang the motor. Just found this out as I was searching for a jack point from top. Mind blown

Well this sucks. Instead of going through the trouble of removing the oil pan. I just broke off a chunk from where it was cracked. And what falls out...a piece of a rod. The car definitely threw a rod. I guess it's not true. You can start a car with a broken rod. Now do I part it out. Sell it whole. Or get a motor?

Yeah. I know. I planned on doing the work myself. But doing the math it's not worth it. Why are used n55 so expensive? I figured maybe 2k. But they're all running around 4 or better

Hold up, you could start this thing after throwing a rod? You have video? Impressive.

Yeah. I'll see if I can make one tomorrow. Had to put a starter in it. But yeah it stared and ran for about 15 seconds before it shut down. And started back up.

Yes sight unseen. And was not informed as to any engine damage. But clearly was known as engine tray cover was half removed and folded back for inspection. And it's clear as day when you see the crack. All that was noted was a no crank condition. "Could be minor, could be major." I knew it was a roll of the dice. This time I take the loss. Paid 4K. I was hoping if worst case scenario (motor). Which this is. I could score one for around 2k. And all in I'd be 6-7. Then not bad. But @ another 4K for a motor then I'm right at market value and really not worth the effort. I could probably get back what I spent as a whole or in parts. But again...the effort in parting. And honestly I'd rather get it back in the road because it's pretty clean.
