CIC phone mirroring options

So I was really wanting to get Apple CarPlay or some type of phone mirroring on my idrive, but I have a 2011 535 with the cic and getting CarPlay requires nbt and that's a pricey upgrade (almost $3k). Anyone know of any alternatives?

I've been looking at this too, and there seems to be two alternative solutions to OEM CarPlay.

1) You can use mirroring devices like the one mentioned above. I've never used it so maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong...but I believe that you need to rotate your phone into landscape (cannot be forced for some areas like your home screen.) You potentially need to keep your display on to continue mirroring.

2) There are Carplay adapters that work in the same way as the method above, by tapping into the video input, but then enable carplay/androidauto instead of just mirroring whatever is on your screen. My understanding from their videos is that it works with the steering wheel controls and the OEM idrive controller. E.g. http://www.unichip-tec.com/bmw_carplay_smartbox.html

I will be ordering the second option in the next few months and hoping it works well. Fingers crossed

I've posted before though I don't remember where...

Check out the G30 forum at the "other" BMW site. The consensus there is had they to do it over again, they wouldn't purchase the CarPlay option.

I agree with you and others...the OEM CarPlay option is not worth the price. For those who have a compatible car, OEM CarPlay is available for a $1 one month trial (in Australia at least). The new iDrive has many features that make CarPlay redundant. There are also several reasons to dislike OEM CarPlay, such as Waze not using the full screen.

However, for those like myself without Connected drive, a retrofitted carplay system allows me to "push" nav addresses onto my CIC screen. The aftermarket CarPlay solution also stretches the entire screen.

For anyone looking at any sort of mirroring retrofit option, I would suggest you do your own research to understand the options available and pick what best suits your needs.

No worries, but you're right. Even I wouldn't get the OEM CarPlay option.

From what I understand is that if you were wanting that functioning the link that someone posted above will work fine however you have to keep it on the whole time in order for the phone to be mirrored onto the screen.

I was wanting something that works identical to Apple CarPlay. Not wanting to keep my phone on the entire time in order for it to work. I guess I'll have to upgrade to nbt.. if anyone has some cheap suggestions or a retrofit link that'd be greatly appreciated for me and other people interested in this retrofit. Imo bimmer techs price of 2700-3000 for this is just outrageous for a car that costs 15-20k. Maybe I'll have to upgrade to a 550..? Lol 🤔
