535i Custom Exhaust Cold Start + Revs (M5 Muffler, X Pipe, J Pipe, JB4+E85)

Hey all,

I posted this on reddit in /r/bmw and got a lot of good feedback so I figured I'd share with you guys as well. Here's a cold start and revving video of my 535i with M5 mufflers (valves closed), an x-pipe in place of resonator, and two 36" J-Pipes for drone reduction, not that there really is any but I commute regularly and wanted to make sure my highway cruising was dead quiet, which it is!

Sounds awesome.

So what's the deal with the valves. I wanted to get some M5 mufflers but how does the valve system work? AKA open/close them?

If you have a 550 then you can hookup the valves to your vacuum lines and they will open and close depending on throttle and RPMs for volume control. If you have a 535 we don't have vacuum lines for valves so you either keep the valves closed or keep them permanently open. I found they caused severe drone when permanently open, but when closed they still give the same beautiful sound but with minimal to no drone. Pretty remarkable how 2 more tips can cause so much volume.

nicely setup exhaust, well done.

the ecu does need to adjust to the new mods which takes about 300 miles. expect the exhaust to sound better once this is done. it is best to do each exhaust mod one by one for the sake of the ecu.

by j pipe, did you mean downpipe?

so there is no drone with an x-pipe right?

Look up quarter length resonators, that's what I mean by j pipes.

I did this about 2k miles ago and am currently running a JB4 on map 5 with about 35-40% E85 on this clip.

No drone with the X pipe. It def brought the mufflers to life which can feel a bit quite at times. I have a catless DP I'll be installing soon as well.

I believe we can and I've already thought of doing that right before my mufflers...

It did for me. Made the exhaust deeper and a bit more throaty. Seen original post for an updated video with revving.

I did. Having some issues with rattling around the X pipe and a whistle on the right exhaust tips at WOT.

Rattling on the XPipe that doesn't sound right. You mean is requires some support bar wielded to it?

I saw this on the gram. Thought it was a cool concept to J Pipes.

Not really sure if it requires a support bar. It's more upon deceleration at like 2k-1.5k rpm you can hear a metallic rattling noise around the x pipe area, potentially before the x pipes. I'm having another shop look at it cause Mike's is saying "that's normal and just your car".

Definitely a cool concept but seems pretty expensive to custom fab. I think that's the akrapovic exhaust if I'm not mistaken?

My jpipes have a small support piece wielded to the main exhaust pipe to prevent them from touching and rattling. I can take a picture later. Never heard of a xpipe rattle nor should that be the norm

I had that done as well, that's not where the rattle is coming from. It comes and goes so I'm not too concerned with it. When I go to put my catless DP on I'll see if they can identify the noise.
