Sparkplug Gaping Question
So about 4k miles ago I installed OEM spark plugs - I am wondering if it is safe to gap them to .018?
Another option is the NGK 95770 and gap them to .018 - I heard they are identical to OEM plugs and same heat range. Another option is NGK 97506KT and gap them to .018. What I really want to know is if it is safe to gap OEM plug to .018? I am asking because running more boost is giving me misfires and I am currently on stock gap of .031. I run the 97506's at .020" with no issues, with high boost.

Do you run E85? My spark plugs go bad within in a few months. I'm being told it because of the E85 and my custom tune. My mechanic is saying my ignition coils will need to me changed more often also because of that.

My old coils were still good but I got them changed any way just because of the miles on them. Plus, on FCP website they are dirt cheap. Also, I am only getting misfires because of running higher boost. So, I wanted to see what plugs would be best choice or if I could still use OEM plugs with .018-.020 gap. |

running 17psi boost everything is fine but as soon as boost is raised to 19psi I get misfires so I am thinking it has to do with the spark plugs and the gaping. |

I'd say it depends on how much boost you are running. Most should do fine with one step colder plugs. I believe with at least .022 gap. I see people using 2 step colder at .020 gap.

You really need to look at a log at 19 PSI you will need supplemental fueling, I found 17 to be about the limit before I would run lean and misfire without having my PI enabled.
I run Arizona pump E85 with the 2 step colder 97506's. Our pump E85 is really around E52. I was running the BM3 OTS Stage 2 E30 map (+ JB4), but I have been working Cary Jordan on a custom tune.

Issue was afr was running too rich post gear shift causing engine to misfire.
In any case this could have probably been fixed without swaping out the spark plugs, but at least I am running better gap and colder plugs lol. |

I also plan to update that post with dyno numbers on pump 93 octane once all tuning is sorted out. If you want me to record how fast the car is right now, I can do that as well but I dont have go pro or special camera. I also plan on doing 0 to 60 times and such using dragy. But not until all tuning is sorted. Last edited by ziekxq; 04-14-2019 at 08:50 PM.. |

My spark plugs were fine, it was an issue with afr running too rich post gear shift. Tuning fixed it but I still installed colder ngk 97506 plug with .020 gap. I am still noticing minor misfires up till 4500rpm, so hoping next map update will fix that issue. Im pretty close to being done with power on 93 octane. Now just need to get minor issues tweaked out.
Car doesnt feel smooth unil 4500rpm, after that its smooth as butter. I dont know how to explain it maybe I should record a video. |
