Seized Up Engine. Need Some Help🙏🏾

My 2012 528i died on me in the middle of traffic, towed it to BMW to get a diagnosis, just got an email, and apparently my engine seized and that I need to replace it. They're quoting 15k for the engine and 1.8k to replace the exhaust turbocharger, which I cannot afford. Could anyone please give me some advice or at least a cheaper alternative, would really appreciate 🙏🏾

Definitely get a second opinion at a local Indy shop.

You could spend $2k to open the engine up and figure out what went wrong.

Could be something easy for a couple grand or could be toast. You won't know until you do it.

I bet you can get a new engine at a much more reasonable cost as well if you do that, but it will probably cost $3k to install.

Terrible deal all the way around.

Below is an m5 post but you can gleen some info from it.

Ditto the 2nd opinion. I know it sucks because you have to pay to tow it around and it just feels like more lost money. You can always look for a used engine. Would be a lot cheaper than new. Or, you can sell it as is - you'd be surprised how much you could get in this crazy used car market.

Good luck.

Look at your local salvage yards , a used N55 motor will vary in price with mileage, but your looking at from anywhere from 3900.00 to 4800.00 for motors under 80k and lower what i've seen around

This^^. OP did you get the timing chain guides replaced under the special 7yr 70k extended warranty offered by BMW to all impacted N20 engine customers? I did it right before the 7 year mark. I also know there is a class action settlement that made BMW pay for repairs that customers had to make on their own. You should ask the dealer about this and to take it up with BMW for you. Or research the settlement and see what you may be entitled to.

Sorry this happened to you.
